It definitely does not do that! Sure, it shows how wonderful nature can be, but the 'evil' side of society is purported through the eyes of Mr 'Supertramp'. Don't forget that he dies in horrendous pain, feeling lonely and scared!

I don't think he's a selfish knob, either. The film describes a significant chunk of his troubled childhood, mostly the emotional torment caused by his parents.

Spoiler: his parents are an allegory for society.

Okay, well if that's the case maybe it does push the anti-society message a bit too hard .

That didn't really come across too well to me, though. Seemed more like a very basic depiction of a broken home.

Nah man, the film really glorifies his life. What really should be a horrible, lonely death is still treated like he's reaching some greater truth. I mean, what a load of bollocks to go on that long-winded spiritual journey to reach the lame-ass epiphany of 'life's a bit boring if you don't have people to share it with'. Most of us figure that out without having to give away everything we own and leave without so much as a note. It's proper Hollywood glamour. real-ass white boy done right sentimental guff. 'Look, he can use that money to call his sister who literally doesn't even know if he's still alive, but he's going to give it to the tramp instead. Isn't that nice?', no it really isn't. I just found the guy thoroughly unlikable, and the film completely misunderstands what should be the legacy of his story; don't strawberry float about in the wild if you know what's good for you. There have been plenty of stories from park rangers around the place where we eventually died saying how people flock there like some sort of pilgrimage, and that they're putting their lives at risk trying to emulate that journey.

The film does look pretty at times though.

So, I watched what probably is one of the worst movies I have watched in a long time, and that was the re-make of Cabin Fever. I mean, why? Why? What was the point of it? The original wasn't that good, but at least it didn't take itself too seriously and was tongue in cheek for most parts. But this version took itself seriously and it was literally a blow by blow version of the original (think Vince Vaughn's version of Psycho)
I got to the final third act and turned it off, couldn't put up with that gooseberry fool anymore.

gooseberry fool/10 - strawberry floating avoid.....

Got confused and thought you were saying there was a remake of Cabin in the Woods. Thought it seemed a bit soon

Everest - 7/10

Makes you realise just how insane mountaineers are to attempt climbing in such a dangerous place.

Loses a few points for straying too far from the true story its based on but still an enjoyable (and tense) watch.

Don't watch if you're scared of heights.

In what ways does it stray from the true story? I was under the impression that although Hollywood film making liberties were taken with some of the characters, the overall story was accurate?

Can anyone do me a solid and recommend a film for tonight that's uplifting but not Blind Side-esque bullshit schmalz?

Agree with the Into the Wild hate, guy was a self-righteous moron.

A Little Princess.

No seriously. It's delightful and hits some serious feels in the end. If you want to justify it as totally not a film for kids then focus on the knowledge that it was directed by Alfonso Cuaron with cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki. You're watching the early work of two future greats right there.

You mean at home or at the cinema? I've heard La La Land is supposed to be quite brilliant and uplifting. Seeing it today myself.

It's strange to see so much praise for a musical film. I'm seeing La La Land next week. Excited!

I'll try watch it later this week when I've got the time and I'm alone, don't think my girlfriend would be keen.

Going to see La La Land next weekend, really looking forward to it. Gosling

Looks and sounds like a load of wank to me but I guess I'm just not in the target audience.

If at home, I recommend Hunt for the Wilderpeople after recently watching it.

It's majestical.

Do you often contemplate the complexity of life?

Eye in the Sky is amazing if you like political thrillers.
Our kind of Traitor is also great and has that bloke from the star wars prequels in
Money Monster was good with George Clooney
Jason Bourne as it's Jason Bloody Bourne so what do you expect.

There, 4 films.

The Wailing - 8/10
I really liked it but on first viewing not quite as much as The Yellow Sea or The Chaser, however I think it will only get better with a re-watch.

If it was then I'd opt for Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.

I just hadn't hadn't seen any of those and I'm making an effort to finish my movie backlog this year.

La La Land 8/10 That was really, really good and not at all what I was expecting, espceially after the high energy opening number. Thought it was gonna be this twee, colourful, sweet musical, but oh boy. You can tell it was from the director of Whiplash.

:slol:

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are both fantastic. Those final 10 minutes  Such a great ending. Probably not worth all the awards it's already picked up and the Oscars it will inevitably sweep, but it is quite good.
