I understand that they have to speed through the intro to get the story caught up with the overarching Marvel world, but the byproduct of that to me was that Stephen Strange didn't appear to have to work all that hard to get to where he got. Benjamin Bratt had the long global search for someone that could help ease his pain, and then he just straight-up tells Strange to go to this place and they'll fix your gooseberry fool. He never really seemed to face much adversity compared to the other characters, and I couldn't help but feel he was undeserving of being the hero in that story.
Spot on. I realise that they didn’t want to spend an entire movie on a Cumberbatch training montage, but to explain it away as
“well he has natural talent and a good memory” while his only problem was not being able to "let go" was poor.
Bratt wasn't the only interesting character that got short changed either, I thought
Ejiofor's character was interesting but they barely showed any of his motivations other than saying he had demons and stuck to the rules before they suddenly turn him into the bad guy. Hopefully his backstory is fleshed out more in later movies.
