The Shining - 8/10

I'd never seen this before, so felt it was due a watch. A lot better than I'd been led to believe (in terms of how well it held up) - lots of people have told me not to bother with it. Great use of sound and music, and I loved the numerous long shots travelling down the corridors which really put across the scale and loneliness of the hotel. Jack Nicholson was great, and his wife - while very annoying - was pretty believable. Couldn't help but laugh at the kid in some of the scenes, but he was pretty tolerable for a child actor. Good overall.

Is there a good quality version of Wick 2 that we now need to avoid on various piracy platforms I take it.

I just want to be sure that I don't accidentally watch it and therefore commit a crime.

That would be awful

I can indeed confirm that there are some dastardly good versions of JW2 in the public domain. Be careful.

Heat - 8/10

The firefight when they are escaping the bank. Probably the best firefight I've seen in a film. This movie was like actor central. So many familiar faces.

It was a bit long, and I feel like some things should have been left out, but I enjoyed it well enough. Pacino is class in it.

Damn it, another film has leaked into the public domain and now I'll need to avoid accidentally watching it in full HD glory. :|

Pirates of the Caribbean - the new one

3/10

Well that was crap. Depp phones it in, young Depp is uncanny valley and just weird.

The film has no memorable set pieces or funny bits, it's just a re hash of the previous movies. The ending scenes do tie the series together well and at least one character gets a good story arc.... But it's just so vanilla. The trailers didn't spoil it as there is nothing to spoil. Very boring and it felt like all the long drawn out bits of part 2 and 3 were used as guidance for this. Just a very tired and flat film. Also the audience chuckled maybe twice throughout it.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Very disappointing, especially considering I really enjoyed the first one. There is a stream of unfunny banter throughout pretty much the entire film.

Hugo - 8/10

I thought this was a lovely film. And a lovely ode to early cinema.

Baywatch - 7/10

Well that was a pleasant surprise. Very strong cast, all look amazing, the guys have six packs on their six packs. CJ is stunning, Summer is also jiggle-some. Most jokes hit, it captures the stupid plot of the TV show and it has some heart. An entertaining movie and very well paced.

Logan - 9/10

Second only to The Dark Knight in the comic book superhero world. It was superb.

A Monster Calls 8/10

I'd heard good things, but the generic advertising and positioning as your standard YA fare had tempered my expectations somewhat. In fact, the buzz was correct and this was quite a remarkable film. Stunning in places and traumatising in others it had me and my girlfriend in sheets of tears by the end, to the point where she was still crying a good 10 minutes after it had finished. The only negatives were a rather predictable bullying storyline and Signourny Weaver's shite English accent.

Oh god. Thanks for reminding me about this .

It really is a beautiful and desperately sad film.

Watched a few films over the weekend.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - 7/10
A decent enough sequel that carries on from the original quite well.

POTC: At Worlds End - 5/10
Too long, too much unconvincing CGI and a plot that makes little to no sense. Giant pirate armada faces off against East India company armada. Both stay still while two ships fight. What was the point in spending 2/3rds of the film assembling this Pirate army? The Calypso sub-plot is utterly pointless and only seems to have existed so they could have a giant whirlpool for the big ship battle. Utter waste of time.

Aliens - 10/10
Still strawberry floating amazing. Perfectly paced, well written and well acted throughout. Even Carrie Henn doesn't annoy.
Visually it's still fantastic. With the most consistently spot-on Alien effects in the whole series. In fact I'd go as far as to say that none of the other Alien movies that came after this have bettered it. They've all had at least one sequence or scene where the Aliens just don't look right (Thank you CGI). Facehuggers have never looked better and the scene in the medlab with them loose still looks amazing. Utterly astounding for a 31 year old movie. The only "dodgy" effects are some of the bluescreen which has aged poorly. Top tier model and puppet work throughout. Bring back practical effects for the next one Ridley.
It's a toss up for me between this and the first, it really is. Phenomenal films.

One of my favourite movies. The Blu-ray transfer for it is strawberry floating amazing as well. Really shows how much detail there is in the set design.

Also, has the best hype moment in a movie ever. I'm talking about Ripley coming out in the loading machine to fight the queen. That line.

Alien Covenant - 7/10

Enjoyed it, but bit unsure about it all. Need to chew on this one a bit.
