Ive just watched the prestige. Not seen it before. good film. The thing i dont get is why didnt hugh jackman at the end ask him if he tied the knot? I figure his wifes death was jackmans motivation to ruin christian bale, so with his dying breath why didnt he ask him about that? Also even if it was the other twin who got scolded by micheal caine for suggesting the other type of knot, then surely bale 2 would have known he shouldnt tie the knot because its dangerous. Im trying to work out who the baddy was - hung Bale , alive Bale or Jackman?

Angiers is so far into his obsession at this point that he's almost completely forgotten about his wife and the knot. His hatred for Borden is now so absolute the original source has become irrelevant. He straight up says this to his assistant earlier in the film. If anything, the fact that he doesn't ask just adds to his character. Also there are no bad guys, just men driven to horrific acts through obsession. Again, this is stated in the closing dialogue between the two survivors.

It's the nuances and the questions the plot makes you ask yourself, as you have done, that I think marks this as a genuinely extraordinary film.

I also just watched memento. Not seen that before. Also a good film. I kind of feel worse for watching Memento than the Prestige though.

EDIT: Id say on reflection Memento is the better film than the prestige. Even though its confusing, the storyline seems to tie up better.

Funnily enough, I watched Memento this arvo too and about an hour in I realised I'd never actually seen it all the way through. It's a nice little trick piece, the stitching together of the story is masterfully done and it's clear that it set the tone for Nolan's entire career. However, the story itself is largely uninteresting and once you've pieced it together there's little appeal to watching it through again. There's no ambiguity, no secrets, it's a standard crime story with largely unlikeable and two dimensional characters told in a fascinating way.

Foxcatcher - 6/10
+ Good to see Steve Carell in a non-comic role, and thought he was pretty good
+ Mark Ruffalo - always quality
+ Pretty interesting plot, not one that I was aware of and despite not really being into wrestling that wasn't a barrier

- Dragged a bit
- Felt like it was lacking...something

Was tempted to buy this a while ago. Glad I didn't, as it's not something I can see myself re-watching, although that's not to say it isn't worth seeing. Decent performances all round, I think maybe it's one of those stories that just doesn't translate well into a 2 hour film.

The Void - 8/10
+ Great visual effects
+ Some good imagery
+ Lots of gore and violence
+ Unknown actors (to me) but they all did a decent job; the film suited the lack of a 'big' name.
+ Kept the action coming at a good pace
+ Plot that kept me interested...

- ...but ultimately got needlessly weird for seemingly no reason

I'd been looking forward to this for a while. I don't think there's much to criticise, it does what it set out to do and does it well for the most part. The plot is the only thing I have an issue with; it feels like it's trying too hard to be weird and disturbing, when all it really does is make you think that they should've kept it simpler. Doing that might have made the plot a bit more run of the mill, sure, but I feel that would've been better than what we actually ended up with.

Saw Dunkirk tonight too, incredible, Nolan really knows how to shoot film.

The audio was loud in IMAX and although all the action sounded great did anyone else have trouble hearing the spoken dialogue?

Dunkirk

I really, really liked this. I'm not the biggest fan of Nolan, especially his tendency to include a lot of inelegant expository dialogue in his films, but while that's present here too, it's kept to a minimum and the film primarily focuses on placing you right there on the beach, the Channel and the cockpit. I appreciated a lot of the decisions made; the relentless pace, the claustrophobic spaces, the lack of any contrived monologue about the horrors of war and the portrayal of the Germans as a mostly unseen enemy. The audio has been lauded enough, those Stukas were terrifying. Mark Rylance was the standout performance and credit to Tom Hardy for expressing so much with just his eyes. Speaking of which, the Spitfire scenes... :datass:

If you have even a vague interest in seeing the film, make sure you do so in the cinema.

Baby Driver

I loved this too. It had a very classic Hollywood feel to it, particularly the romance angle, and the entire cast was excellent. I would need to watch it again to say for certain, but it could very well be my favourite Edgar Wright film, everything about it screams passion project and I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end.

How stunning was Lily James in this, by the way?!

Hellraiser.

Disappointed the DVD clean up is only marginally better than VHS, but as a film it remains a horror great. Many of the effects are as gruesome and hold up incredibly well. The Cenobites take centre stage, as expected, with Pinhead as terrifying as always.

Hellbound: Hellraiser II

Like the first Hellraiser, Hellbound still delivers which is surprising considering the films low budget. There's a few ropey moments and some questionable props, but overall Hellraiser still brings home buckets of gore combined with a wonderfully disturbing vision of Hell.

Once again Pinhead and the other cenobites are the stars of the show.

"So eager to play, yet so reluctant to admit it!"

Great stuff. 8/10.

War for the Planet of the Apes

8/10

I thought this was brilliant, an excellent end to what has been a very enjoyable trilogy.

Best film of the summer so far, in my opinion.

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.

They never do but I always see them as like watching the cgi cutscenes of a game on YouTube so I know I'll enjoy it regardless.

Dunkirk - 4/10 - Very disappointing after all the high praise reviews. The best bits of the film are Hardy's final Spitfire gliding scenes.

Beauty & the Beast (recent version with Emma Watson).

Bought it on DVD as an extra school holiday treat for my girls. They'd seen it at the cinema and loved it and naturally I was more than happy to watch it with them this evening.

I thought it was pretty good with some great casting all round, (Luke Evans as Gaston was particularly superb). Much like Disney's original version it's an enjoyable family movie.

Dunkirk 3/10

There's so little to say about this that is good. Well shot, sums up the good. Everything else is boring, sterile garbage. Best war film ever, some banana splits have said. Three Kings gooseberry fools on this from such a massive height it would obliterate the earth.

There is no characterisation. So it is boring. That's the long and short of it. It's not bold to ignore that important aspect of film making, it's lazy. Don't get me wrong, it's fine not to conform with typical cinematic tropes if you have something special. But this film is garbage. Tedious, no stakes, indulge-fest about something that should be anything but.

Wowsers really shocked at people not loving Dunkirk, I saw it last night on iMax, and I was utterly captivated the whole way through, the sound was simply incredible there, really a terrifying experience. Probably my favourite Nolan film, just a shame next time I see it, it wont sound anything like that. :datass:
