The Babadook - 7/10

I thought this was decent. I thought it was an interesting dynamic, with the kid being on the spectrum (the scene in the car was stellar). The actress who played the mother was also excellent.

Probably the biggest failing was the Babadook itself. The appearance of the thing was not really that scary. Reminded me of Noel Felding, in that one scene. But still, the movie had a good atmosphere and it had some nice touches. Didn't really know anything about it before I watched it.

The Room. Do you want cheesecake/10

strawberry float me. I knew of it of course, but had never gotten around to actually submitting myself to the horror. It's a genuinely fascinating piece of work, a look through a mirror darkly into the twisted id of a man with some serious, serious issues. But it's also laugh out loud funny. The above mentioned cafe scene had me rolling with laughter and the constant sex scenes got funnier the more they appeared, but man. There's some deep issues being looked at here, however unintentional.

Winter River - 8/10

From the director of Hell or High Water, very much the same slow burning character driven movie. Excellent performances all round and some very good tension building. It's a grim movie towards the end but a very good one. Well worth a watch but not a fun movie.

It's directed (and written) by Taylor Sheridan, the guy who wrote Hell or High Water. The latter was directed by David Mackenzie. It's also called Wind River. ;)

Anyway, didn't realise it was out already, been really looking forward to it. Sheridan considers it part of his 'American Frontier' trilogy (of which it's the last of), along with Sicario and Hell or High Water. Pretty bloody good set of films to be behind.

Mother!

Maybe I wasn't in the mood for a film like this but I just just wasn't into this film at all, far and away the most obnoxiously, pretensious film I've seen this year. Uninvested in the characters, could not make any sense of the movie at all, nor did I care to look. Reading peoples thesis on it now and it's starting to make some sense and there is actually a very interesting subject matter to be broken down when looked into.

I don't know, it's Aronofsky, it's divisive, it'll leave you beaten by the time you leave but will give you something to talk about.

It's utterly amazing, I would suggest to anyone interested in this watching a proper screening of it (PCC in London does it monthly; and Wiseau usually appears annually now, he's as mental as one would expect) and see the utter chaos. SPOONS!

I'm looking forward to the Disaster Artist adaptation coming out. The story of it being made sounds just as ridiculous as the final product.

Like Ecno above, I enjoyed that one song but thought the actual story was a bit meh. It was harmless enough though and the CGI was very pretty. My daughter liked the bit with the fish and chicken, so that's something.

Since the above post my daughter has made me watch Moana 4 more times and I've grown to like it a bit more with each viewing. The songs are all pretty great, especially the ones with the tribal language stuff, kinda soul-enriching if that makes sense.

My 16 month old loves it. He gets so excited when it's on and dances away to the songs. Just for that cuteness alone it's a great movie.

Baby Driver - 9/10

I love Edgar Wright's movies and thought this was amazing. I loved the way the music synced to the onscreen action and the chases were brilliantly done.

I can see why people wouldn't like it, but it's one of this years highlights to me.

I thought it was fantastic - would definitely agree with the 9/10 score in hindsight.

I especially like the chase sequence that ran in sync to Hocus Pocus by Focus(given that the song runs to nearly 7 minutes and was barely cut for the film, it was impressive that the scene never became flat or boring), it was genuine cinematic genius for me.

The Jungle Bunch

This was my penance for getting to watch the football this afternoon...taking my 7 year old lad along to see this.

I suppose the animation was nice enough but the film itself was an incredibly soulless and turgid affair. It was a typical by the numbers animation that ticked all the required anthropomorphic tropes and just meandered from set up for video game set piece to set piece. The plot was illogical and confusing but was actually quite dark and twisted...the opening of the movie was basically a bloody terroist attack. It was a long 90 minutes.

American Assassin - 7/10

Michael Keaton is brilliant as always, good supporting cast, enjoyable action scenes and good pacing. Pretty forgettable but worth a watch.

Always thought the trailer of this looked fantastic but reviews have slated it, will give it a watch based on your comments mind.
