I watch this every couple of years or so and I find it mesmerising. It's quite odd but with, in my view, wonderful moments of feeling. Jim Carrey shows another side to his acting skill and Kate Winslet is terrific.

"This is it, Joel. It's gonna be gone soon."
"I know."
"What do we do?"
"Enjoy it."

And the ending is just perfect. I love it... it's one of my favourite films.

If you're still in a Jim Carrey mood, I so recommend Jim & Andy on Netflix

Jim & Andy 9/10

A documentary on the scenes behind Man on The Moon as well as Jim Carrey himself. I heard that this was the "true" Kaufman experience compared to the movie going in and wasn't it just. Carey goes full method, continually staying in Kaufman and his characters while on set. He was an absolute nightmare on set but I couldn't take my eyes off it from start to finish.

This is what happens when you let a couple of nerds loose on a film script with a big budget.

It comes across as though it's aimed at children, but derives most of its comedy and 'memorable' moments by injecting a steady stream of references from the 80s that won't mean anything to them.

Only manchild applicants need apply.

Sounds like they’ve just been faithful to the source material....

That sounds like an interesting film, Floex... thanks, man - I don't have Netflix but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Thor: Ragnarok - 8/10

So they really did go full-on comedy with this then. I really enjoyed it, looked great and for the most part it worked. Bit of a shame that it lost some gravitas as a result, but that Hemsworth's got some good comic timing.

Loved the blue rock monster guy, he was hilarious

I enjoyed the movie and thought the blue rock monster guy was the best character in it. He was voiced by the director.

Best character would be a tie between him and the Grand Master. Goldblum was awesome as ever

I also loved the unexpected cameos of Matt Damon and Sam Neill during the Asgardian theatre production, so random

Pacific Rim Uprising - 6/10

It's a strange old film. It doesn't have the threat or style of the first film. It has a huge lack of monster and a very odd character choice, buts it's watchable and well made. It needs more threat, more drama and less popcorn vibes.

The third film will be interesting, but this one is very much the trailer but little else. No real surprises with the action or monsters, just a few plot twists.

Forgettable fun with some very piss poor creature design. Bring back Knifehead from the first film.

Wish my image sig would work

The Magnificent Seven (2016) - 7/10

Not bad for a modern western, aside from the obvious bits of CGI and green screen. Perhaps a touch too “Hollywood” for my liking.

Haley Bennett though :datass:

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - 7.5/10

I was expecting nothing from this but found it very entertaining.

Annihilation - 7/10.

Enjoyed this. Liked the lack of excess exposition and the efficiency of most of the plotting/dialogue, though as with many group films the supplementary characters never quite act in a believable, naturalistic way (especially paramedic whose 'trick of the light' assertion was dumb and absurd, and her 'going crazy' scene was a bit over-wrought too). The whole journey in the Shimmer in general felt a little quick and didn't quite feel like a long enough ordeal for the character actions and payoff.

Also thought overall it looked a little mannered: Zoomed-out with few close-ups, and felt a little detached for it - though I think that may have been part of the point. And though it's filmed in HDR it made the foreground too murky for my liking compared with the scorched-sky backdrops so I had to turn it off.

Natalie Portman was genuinely excellent, and combined with whatever clean-eating Keto diet she's on gives her a suitably taut, strained screen presence that is completely and consistently compelling.

Didn't really get weird or bizarre enough (though the screaming bear was great) - I'm not sure there's much here more visually novel then skimming through a few chemical brothers music videos or something. And even when it did it was still within normal cinematic form - without any exploitation of film's ability to bend and stretch time and space (though of course a conscious decision).

But despite all that, I can't help but give it a 7/10 on my gut reaction to the film, which was that I found it intriguing and engrossing throughout.

Baby Driver. Ok, but not really sure why this is getting as much praise as it is.

That's a really nice breakdown of the film which is definitely not perfect. However, about the bolded bit...

EDIT: Whoops, missed that you were just talking about the visuals there. Still, both articles are still worth a look.

Because it’s Edgar Wright and also very stylish. I think it lacks substance though and agree it’s overrated.

Man With the Iron Heart

Details the rise of top ranking Nazi SS commander Reinhard Heydrich, (Himmler's right hand man and architect of The Final Solution) , and his eventual assassination by two Czech resistance fighters.

Quite a powerful movie that, as you might expect, can be a tough watch. The second half of the film focuses on the secret service trained Czech soldiers who, at the cost of their own lives, do succeed in killing the evil bastard.

Get Out (2017) - ****
Office Space (1999) - ***

Children of Men (2006) - *****
Beautifully shot and with a lot of heart, I was captivated by this. What ever happened to Clive Owen, anyway?

The Running Man (1987) - ***
Arnie is a joy to watch as always, but I was hoping to like this a little more than I did. Campy, enjoyable action, but not of the same quality as something like Commando.

Videodrome (1983) - ***
One of those films where I'm not even really sure what to think afterwards, like I did with Under The Skin fairly recently. I can see myself watching both of them again and falling in love but for now, this stands as one of the more bizarre films I've seen.

Strange Days (1995) - *****
My initial reaction was to give this 4 stars, but I've barely stopped thinking about it since last night. I really enjoyed this. All the performances were great, Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett, in particular, killed it and played possibly the most charming and likeable leads I can remember seeing. It almost felt directionless for the first 30 minutes or so, but that's just where the "plot" really starts to ramp up. The character building done beforehand (and throughout) is essential to the story and themes, as well as making the ending feel so, so earned. Highly recommended.

Strange Days is so underrated. Should be rendered a classic for Tom Sizemore’s mullet alone.
