Last film you watched and your rating: The Directors Cut

Coco - 6/10

My daughter enjoyed it but after the highs of Moana I found it a bit lacklustre.

Ready Player One - 6.5/10. Quite a bit changed and left out the book didn't help this film for me.

Everybody Wants Some

This is the film of my life. I love it. The acting, script, direction — everything is top class. This is real nostalgia.

A Quiet Place

Really good. Has a bit of It Follows about it, except it doesn't turn to gooseberry fool in the second half.

There are a number of questions you obviously start thinking about, e.g. how it began and how it managed to get to the situation it does when we join in at the start of the film, but because it never attempts to explain any of this, it never opens itself up to what would inevitably see it completely fall apart.

Annihilation

Really enjoyed this. The monster taking on the dying screams of its victim was horrifying. I'll happily consume more films like this if Netflix can keep pumping them out.

Everybody Wants Some

It had been a while since the last time, so I had to watch this again. Absolutely bloody love it .

Edit - just seen I already posted about watching EWS last night yeah I was pretty drunk.

Street Fighter. It's a bad movie.

The Shining.I decided to watch this again due to having the cold and needing to watch something brilliant. No need for a rating as you all know how strawberry floating immaculate it is,but I'll give it one anyway.

Ghost Stories - 6/10
A modern take on those British Amicus horror portmanteau films from the 60's and 70's. The stories themselves are fantastic at wracking up the tension but the conclusions are disappointing. Some great performances from Paul Whitehouse and Alex Lawther but the central character had nothing for me to care about so the conclusion of his tale (the one that binds the film together) left me feeling flat. At times I felt the film was trying to be cleverer than it really was. Such a shame.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 4

Often looked pretty and had one decent fight scene, but apart from that very hard viewing. Bad script, poor acting across the board, the plot's a shambles and I'm shocked at how sloppily they handled such a loved franchise. Easily the worst Star Wars for me, and just a bad film in general.

A Quiet Place - 9/10

Loved it. Could even be a 10/10 as I can’t think of anything I didn’t really like about it.

Star Wars Ep V 'The Empire Strikes Back'

While it has some awful redos, (and to be fair some good ones too), courtesy of Lucas, Empire still remains the best in the entire series.

It's bizarre how much this film divides people.

We watched it again recently, my third in total and the first on a small screen, and it still blew me away. It's the first Star Wars in a generation that's actually trying to say something, and it uses every cinematic technique it can to ram this message home. From having the characters literally shout it, to the way the story goes to new and interesting places, metaphorically and literally, it's one giant middle finger to the Force Awakens' complete paranoia of doing anything new with the franchise. It's easily my second favourite SW behind ESB.

Also, Ren is a better villain than Vader. I mean, obviously.

What an incredible movie. I’m giving it a 9 and the only thing losing it a mark is the totally unnecessary handful of jump scares scattered throughout. It really ticks all the boxes of how a movie should make you feel and it’s got that thinking about it for days after thing going on in spades. Off to see it again Friday evening.

Fair enough, maybe I'm just past it now. I found Ren to be implausibly inconsistent, and none of the other new characters particularly interesting. Same with the planets. It just didn't seem to have the depth or wonder of Lucas' films, was more like a Marvel film.

Tangerines - 8.5

Excellent little anti-war film set in the aftermath of the USSR. Feels like it could have been a play; very atmospheric and quite touching tbh.

Icarus - 9

Anyone with an interest in sport should watch this. Extremely eye opening documentary about the Russian doping scandal. It starts off interestingly enough, looking at the impact steroids can have on a filmmaker attempting to compete in a gruelling amateur cycling event, but the narrative shifts direction in the second half and absolutely explodes. From that point onwards it’s truly gripping and while I knew a reasonable amount about the Russian state sponsored doping programme, having it all laid out had huge impact. If I had a few minor criticisms it would be it could have been edited a bit more with a few unnecessary overlong “dramatic” sequences, and it’s not always as clear as it could be but otherwise it’s a brilliant watch.

Interesting. I grew up being scared to death by those made for TV ghost stories (a lot based on the work of M R James) the BBC would have on Christmas Eve or thereabouts, but it's a style that is rarely seen today. This looked to be similar in direction so I'll still give it a watch some time.

Capitalism: A Love Story - 6/10
Raises some interesting points, but as with any Michael Moore film, I always feel the need to fact-check and do my own research on what he says. His tendency to exaggerate things to make a point can get a bit tiresome, as do the 'stunts', and they detract somewhat from the credibility of the film. However, a lot of the things he discusses in this are very believable. Decent watch, but probably my least favourite of the four films I've seen from him.
