The Boy with the Stripped Pyjamas - 7/10

End of it packed a punch. I liked the perspective of the movie.

I like the Ghost Rider character and this film is... okay. The look of Ghostie is great and I liked the start of the storyline, but it kinda fades out. The flames look cool and the bike is ace but they can't make up for the mediocre action. Why do the Rider's flaming chains move so slow when he wields them?

I'd give it [5]. I enjoyed it as a fan - and I've seen it about four times now! - but I can understand why other folk would rather face the penance stare.

I'm gonna watch the sequel next!
As you've given this a 5 and seen it 4 times I'm going to pretend that you have 6 films on DVD and no access to any other movie source (including terrestrial TV). What are the other 5 films you watch on rotation?

Yes?

Haha, I gave the [5] rating as meaning "average" :-). As with games, I don't use the modern assessment scale of [7] being "average" and [9] being "quite good".

My fave films are currently ... Lost in Translation, As Good as it Gets and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Maybe Groundhog Day, too. I watch all of those at least once a year.

Zombies Party? Solid movie, but not a patch on SuperCop.

The Artist

4/5

Really really good, one of those films you'd find whole new meanings in watching it through a second time.

Venom.

I actually had a great time. I mean, I was drunk, but it was fun! It really had that early 2000s Spiderman feel to it. Someone on Reddit described as being a time capsule of a movie, and if you cracked open a capsule from 2002 this movie would be in there, and I totally understand that feel. The main villain was a bit naff tho, actually he was really naff. His tone and motivations seemed to be all over the place.

Death of Stalin - 8

It's really funny but also really, really dark in places. I guess given the subject matter then that's to be expected but Iannucci does manage to blend the horror with the comedy incredibly well. Lots of great performances but Simon Russell Beale as Beria is particularly gruesome. You'd happily take more of any of the characters so it's a great job to balance out all of those personalities so there isn't one dominant performance.

Johnny English Strikes Again 5/10@ Exactly what you'd expect, an uninspired plot, held together by mostly cringey foreseeable humour. Has the tired gags about the French and all. Laughed in places in the cinema, and overall I was never bored. It's fine but I imagine there's better things for most people without small children to watch in the cinema at the moment.

Ready Player One - 8/10

Genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this, I could imagine the internet becoming like that in the not too distant future (albeit with far more porn and ads).

I don't think I've seen more 80's pop culture references in a single film.
