I too would give The Creator 5/10 for exactly the same reasons, sadly

It feels like such a waste...Gareth Edwards' films are amazing on a technical level, yet they're always so emotionally unengaging. It's the same issue with Godzilla 2014 and Rogue One.

I think Monsters may still be my favourite of his, it at least managed to hit a little bit on that front

I just couldn't get into it. I thought I was in for some kind of philosophical drama with added sci-fi, but from very early on it felt like a generic space shoot-'em-up with characters I've seen a hundred times before.

I watched Coherence last night, after seeing a couple of recommendations on here.

It is very good. The saturation of high-budget productions has unfortunately battered my brain into being unable to ignore the shortcomings of low-budget stuff. If it weren't for the inclusion of a few recognisable actors, this could have been made for about £500! I exaggerate, but you get my point.

It works wonders with what it's got. A believable script, great performances – people actually stuttering on some words and talking over each other, just like in real life ! While you can decry some of the logic/actions of some characters, to me it all made sense and was a genuine reflection of how people would react differently in a crisis.

It comes in at under 1h30m, which feels like the ideal time for the plot. It does go very 'B movie' at the end, but I thought it was a reasonable resolution overall.

I really enjoyed The Creator, it was actually one of my favourite films from last year.

Maybe I just had different expectations.

Awful film. I wouldn't even rate it a 5 (I can sense Jawa stewing away in the background ).

Godzilla vs Kong 5/bordeline 6 out of 10.

On paper I should love this. I really enjoyed King of the Monsters and Skull Island. 2014 Godzilla wasn't too bad but GvsK just fell a bit flat. I don't know whether watching it on a tiny screen on a plane took away from the enjoyment but it has put me off going to see the most recent film. I wish they had shown Godzilla Zero instead, I regret not seeing it when it was on at the cinema.

I agree. I found GvK very disappointing after KotM and Skull Island. Skull Island in particular is a great film.

I'd argue Skull Island is the only one that wasn't a big disappointment.

Ghostbusters frozen empire, 7/10. Pretty good. Worth the cinema visit. Deserves to do better than it is currently. An improvement over Afterlife. My main criticism was too many main characters. Paul Rudd seemed to just vanish for the middle half of the film. James Acaster was good, tried his hardest to mask his lisp which didn't always work.

I think i gave it 2/10, and that was being generous.

While I couldn't avoid seeing him as James Acaster he did fit in quite well. Honestly the film probably would have been better if it had just been a Ghostbuster team of Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani and Acaster.

The Godfather Coda - 8/10

An enjoyable conclusion to the series, and a lot better than i was expecting it to be.

Watched Godzilla X Kong. I enjoyed it.

Monkey Man - 10/10


Bloody hell that was great. A very strong driven revenge movie. Everything builds and builds, the music is perfect, the cast are perfect, the representation is PERFECT. Really good to see so many different groups represented, especially good representation for trans characters. Everyone has a character arc and everything happens for a purpose. The struggle is a long one and the action builds and builds until one hell of a final. Closest thing to compare it to is The Raid 2 with it's brutal action and close filming.

It's so strawberry floating good. For a directorial debut it's ridiculously good, MGM need to ask him to both direct and star in the next Bond because he is on fire in this.

No spoilers but it feels like it's building to an ending but it's only the mid point as the films pacing is so good it's hard to tell how long it's been. The last third of the film is glorious.

A wonderful film, with a strong and important message, fight back against your oppressors and if all else fails batter the living strawberry float out of everyone with a kitchen utensil.

Go and see this film!

I wanted to watch Monkey Man anyway, but that's convinced me I should catch it at the cinema.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024 | Cinema)

Today I made my first cinema visit since before the lockdown in 2020 . I can't even remember the last film that I went to see.

Frozen Empire was fun; a wee bit daft and nothing wildly different but thoroughly entertaining. I enjoyed the mix of old and new characters. [6]

[6] on the Jawa scale means it's basically the equivalent of Citizen Kane.

Arrival (2016 | Netflix)

This is what a film can be. Intriguing, confusing, thrilling... emotional. I was totally invested in this and, even though I'm sure that I didn't quite understand it, when arriving at the end felt like I'd experienced something.

It's quite slow and sometimes difficult to follow but the feeling of wanting to understand was engrossing. It's very well shot, too; not in a spectacular, elaborate way but in the feel provided by the darkness and the grey colouring.
