Funny Games (the original). Absolutely perfect film, very difficult to watch but somehow I've managed it twice now. Excels at everything it tries to do. 10/10.

Spoorloos (the original "the vanishing"). A bit strange, but a perfectly enjoyable journey with a great ending. 7/10.

Holy Motors. Very odd, but then that's the whole point. I liked it. 5.5/10.

Tokyo! Wish I'd watched this much sooner. It's brilliant. Each segment has something I love and it's impossible to pick a favourite but the hikikomori and Leos Carax ones made me open my mouth in shock at one point of each. 9/10.

Ready Player One.

Really loved the story here - Wade/Parzival and Samantha/ Art3mis' relationship, the presentation depicting all the real world logistics of a world obsessed with a virtual world, and the consequences that arise when a corporate giant starts throwing their weight around.

The second challenge where they end up in a more twisted (if that's even possible) chain of events referencing The Shining was my favourite act overall.

Unexpectedly heartwarming film. 8.5/10

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

A daft, somewhat bizarre take on the original fairytale, with some entertaining action scenes. Not something I'd watch again as it's mostly forgettable, although at the end of the filmwhen they stumble upon the original witches house from the fairytale proper I did chuckle at Hansel as he sighed "Whatever you do, don't eat the strawberry floating candy"

5/10

Bad Times at the El Royale - 8/10

I really enjoyed it other than my IBS playing up making me take three gooseberry fools during it.

And that's Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. I love the rougher, tougher portrayal of Ghostie in this movie. The flames really are sensational; they even move in a realistic way alongside Cage's body movement. The story is a little better than in the first film albeit it's still a wee bit disappointing. The maniacal personality of Ghostie is a little over-done but the menace that he exudes is cool; he looks like a total badass. And the fiery chains, which were disappointingly slow in the first film, are now far more impressive.

I still have to admit that this film is more for fans of the Rider than for newcomers and, even then, some aspects are weak. Even so, the allure of seeing the flaming Ghostie kickin' butt is a big attraction and my verdict is [6].

Bad Times at the El Royale- 8/10

The film was too long and there were pacing issues (the whole third act could go) but I really enjoyed this. Shame how little Jon Hamm was in it though.

Bad times at the El Royale 8/10: Went into this almost blind. About 1/3 of the way through I thought it was very Tarrintino esque, and then 2/3rds through thought he was actually his work, and was quite surprised at the credits when it wasn't. Didn't feel pacing was really an issue, just looked at the length at 2:20 minutes, didn't really feel that long.

When Darlene smashes the glass bottle over Father Flynn, there was an audible gasp from the audience, including me. The first time I've ever made such a noise during a film.

I agree, it was a shame about Hamm's character wasn't in it for longer.

Bad Times at the El Royale - 9/10

Loved it! Went in completely blind and turns out it's a cool little mystery thriller set around a hotel. To know much more would spoil it.

It is a long film and deliberately slow in places, I love that but the Odeon seats are so uncomfortable that for the last 30mins I was wanting it to end just so I could stretch my legs.

Johnny English Strikes Again - 0.9/10

I got invited to see this, and as it was free I thought "why not?". I've never seen a Johnny English film, but assumed there would be a few laughs seeing as it's Rowan Atkinson. In the end I think I smiled once. One of the worst films I've seen in a long, long time. The only time I've ever left the theatre was when I went to see Men in Black 2, but I think this was amazingly even worse than that.

What's stranger is whilst the kids in the theatre were chuckling away, so we're the majority of adults. Baffling. I pretty much tuned out after maybe 30 mins and was just counting down the minutes. An absolute stinker of a movie with literally no redeeming qualities.

The fact one of the worst characters in The Office U.S. was the main villain never gave me much hope.

Off to see First Man tomorrow, so hopefully that's better..

Lovely stuff from the director of Cabin in the Woods, a man who loves two way windows. Amazing cast and sound track. A long film that doesn't drag.

I really liked it but it needed an extra element like Cabin in the Woods had to raise it to classic level.

A very good watch which is never boring.

I remember when I first saw it, I thought it was going to be a serious zombie film.

That's the one. Terrified me as a kid too. Turns out it's a comedy!

Was it you saying that 2 and 3 are good, but 4 and 5 are pretty crap?

2 is great and has the two warehouse staff from the first in a
Brilliant cameo at the start. 3 is a bit different but has some amazing effects. After that it gets messy, rave from the grave and the other one are just poor zombie films and not in the same spirit. 2 also has one hell of a movie poster as did part 1.

3 also has a very amazing leading lady that could go toe to toe with Trash from the first film.

After seeing ROTLD it's hard to take the endings of The Crazies Remake and Alien Vs Predator 2 seriously as it's literally the very same ending.

Scouts guide to the zombie apocalypse has a similar vibe to return of the living dead, as does Cooties.
