I think it's around 50 minutes in but I can't say I checked my watch for it.

Outlaw King - 6.5/10

It’s a lot better than I expected it to be, but it’s not all that great. I didn’t even notice Pine Todger so Hexx might be disappointed.

If comparisons to Braveheart are right enough I’m not going anywhere near Outlaw King. Looks like as big a pile of shite as Braveheart is anyway.

Mary and the Witch’s Flower - 8/10. Ghibli-lite, but lots of fun.

Kill Bill 1 and 2 8/10

It's hard to overstate how light and airy these films feel when compared to Tarantino's recent output. Both move at a cracking pace, even the comparatively sedate Vol 2, and both refuse to let up on both storytelling and spectacle. There are no 20 minute conversations*, no grinding to a halt to obsess over minute details, no dull sequiturs to irrelevant excess. Both films have a purpose and a drive and they achieve them. Yes it's one story split over two films, yes they could still have done with some cuts (the anime sequence, as nice as it is, could have been cut completely) but they work as a duology.

Also, early 2000s Uma Thurman, man. Jeez.



*I suppose the final Bill encounter is about this long, but it's shot like a duel and the tension is palpable. There're no Inglorious Basterds bar scenes here.

Whiplash - 8/10

Good lord that's one angry jazz conductor. Playing music to this level doesn't seem that much fun to me.

I actually don't think you need to see Alien before watching Aliens. Everything you need to know about the first film is explained in the opening 20 mins of Aliens, it sets the scene perfectly.

That's not to say that Alien can be discarded or is less of a film etc etc, but is there anything that wouldn't make sense if you hadn't seen the first film? I can't think of anything - could be wrong though, happy to be corrected!

I also think, and this may or may not be a controversial opinion, but I don't actually think Ripley's story in Alien is as strong as in Aliens. There's far less of a character arc for her in the original. She starts the film in a position of authority and that never really changes, she ends the film pretty much the same as how she started it, albeit with less clothes and maybe some emotional scarring

In Aliens (spoilered for Ecno, in case he/she's reading) she starts off as this PTSD shadow that is haunted by the loss of her daughter and of the events in Alien, and then grows to face her demons and ultimately conquer them, she definitely grows as a character in the second film far more than in the first.

That's part of the reason I love Alien3 so much - she managed to defeat the Queen and escape and be relatively safe with a new surrogate daughter and Hicks to get involved with and then BAM they're both snatched from her, so brutal and unforgiving, just like the Xenomorph itself. It takes everything from her.

I loved Alien 3. I remember going to the cinema to see it, pretending to be 18 and wearing my mate's Dad's jacket because he smoked and that would somehow add to my story if I got asked how old I was

The documentary that comes as part of the quadrology boxset probably goes some way in explaining why it's considered a mess - from what I remember, it seemed like everyone had it in for Fincher from the very start, which made for a less than enjoyable film making experience.

As Preezy says though, it's how bleak it is that really makes it. I also especially like the 'lore' aspects, like howthe xenomorph's form is determined by its host (dog/ox depending on which version you watch).

Speaking of versions, I'd probably argue against watching the special edition of Aliens as a first viewing. It does add elements to the story, but not to the point that the normal edition is lacking anything without it (if that makes sense). I also found that the extra footage ruins the pace of the film somewhat and that watching the normal edition afterwards makes for a much tighter film.

tl;dr watch Aliens, then Aliens Special Edition for a few 'ahh, I see' moments, then back to Aliens for any future viewings.

And I realise this is probably all redundant as the original discussion was from weeks ago.

Interesting points about the Special Edition, I don't think I've watched the theatrical version of Aliens since watching the SE, that's always been my go-to version. I will have to revisit the regular version next time I need my Aliens itch to scratched.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde [1931] - 8/10; brilliant film, editing and camera techniques light years ahead of its time.

Fredric March is great and the special effects where he changes in front of your eyes are so clever. Surprised by the sexual overtones given the age of the film.

I went to the cinema to see Overlord.

Well, it's a film. It had a great first 20 minutes with them all piling out of a burning plane during D-Day but after that it all goes tits-up and has possibly the most Italian, Italian American soldier of all time even though thinking about it I'm not certain this was intentional.

If like me you like watching rubbish films at the cinema then you'll like this but otherwise the Nazi medical experiments gone wrong shown here are a disappointment (at one point the main bad guy says "A thousand year Reich needs thousand year soldiers" just as one of them gets flattened seconds after turning up) and there's a disturbing attempted rape scene I really didn't like.

4/10 Not entirely unwatchable but bloody stupid and entirely forgettable.
