A Quiet Place - 6/10, entertaining but with lots of daft things going on during the film. You always leave nails in stairs when your walking barefoot Would like to see where they go if there's a sequel.

Child's Play - 6/10, enjoyed this. Seen number 2 or 3 as a kid [he smashes some guy in the head with a golf club and says something like 'don't strawberry float with the Chuck!'] never seen all of the films so this is my next franchise watch through.

Freddy Vs Jason - 6/10, this was way better than expected. Having just finished both Nightmare and Friday 13th series' of films it was a good one to finish on.

Hitman's Bodyguard - 4/10 - subpar, smarky typecast-already Reynolds and how many times can Jackson say mother F'r. Two good set pieces throughout the whole film, boat scene in Amsterdam being the best of the two.

Isle of Dogs 8/10 - Wes Anderson strikes again, fantastical wacky story and stellar cast. It's up there with Grand Budapest and Djarjeeling Limited. It amazes me people fund his films but I'm glad they do!

Kramer Vs Kramer 9/10; one of the best child actors I've seen for a while. Not a big Hoffman fan but think he's ace in this [I made French toast after watching this].

Mean Streets 5/10; liked the world building and the setup but the 'actual' action was poor. Music was fantastic in this, thank god Scorsese went on to bigger and better things.

Terminal 7/10 - it seems like this is a marmite film, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Margot Robbie's accent aside
A good turn by Mike Myers [I never thought I'd say that after suffering the Love Guru!]

Tomb Raider 5/10; just OK - mediocre action film.

The Two Headed Spy 7/10 - good old Jack Hawkins plays real life Alex Scotland [Shotland as the Germans say it] and infiltrates the Nazi's sending their secrets back home to us, tense thriller. Talking Pictures on Freeview is a cracking little film channel for free.

When Harry Met Sally 7/10 - having known nothing about this other than the fake orgasm scene, what a great romantic comedy. The whole concept felt like an extended version of a Seinfeld episode, nice supporting role from Carrie Fisher.

Whisper of the Heart - 8/10

Enjoyed this, shame the director died so young - would've been good to see more. Reminded me of Only Yesterday.

Star Wars: A New Hope - 7/10

Let the kids watch this for the first time recently, they did enjoy it but man I forgot how slow this is to get going!

I know we are all conditioned to much more bombastic big budget movies these days, and in many ways that is a sad thing, there should be room for stuff like Star Wars to have slower moments, but after the initial attack on Leia's ship this film drags massively until well after they reach the death star. I was having to bribe the kids with snacks and the promise of more action just to get them to sit through it!

They're still interested in seeing the next entry but I fear if Empire doesn't grab them then that may be the end of it.

I really don't like A New Hope. I get the importance of it, but as you say, it is slow to the point where it really bored me.

Empire though, I think it's the one that every Star Wars film is measured against. And rightly so. It's a great ride.

Godzilla - City on the edge of battle 8/10

Second part of the Netflix trilogy. The first was slow and only picked up in the final moments. This goes in a very different direction and does something interesting with MechaGodzilla. The most interesting stuff is the set up for part 3 with Mothra and someone else..... being alluded to. A really enjoyable animated movie for fans.

Need to stay to the end of the credits for a brilliant tease for part 3

Yeah Empire is by far the best Star Wars film, it's probably the only one that I would say is genuinely great, the others all fall somewhere in the range between "terrible" and "decent".

I'm hoping we can do a showing of Empire this weekend so I will report back on whether the kids thought it was any improvement!

This is a shame. Maybe it is because the special effects don't hold up well today or because the acting is a bit corny, but I saw this at the cinema at 7 and absolutely loved it. I think I must have seen Star Wars at the cinema about 5 times, it was just sooooo good.

I watched the original 3 a few years back on Blu-ray with my kids but the magic seems to have disappeared.

I would have said the same thing until The Last Jedi. I swear I'm not being contrary when I say I think it's the first of the films since Empire to actually do something interesting with the universe and have, at its heart, a genuine message. It's not as good as Empire, but it's a damn close second.

I've not actually watched Last Jedi yet - I'm a bit behind the curve, but some of the flack it has taken has actually made me more interested to catch up as it does sound like it is at least trying to be different (which admittedly is not always a good thing!)

Force Awakens was too "safe" for me, which I can understand why they did it, but it's definitely not one of my favourites so I'm hopeful TLJ can improve on that...

I haven't seen The Last Jedi either. My brother's hated it with a passion.

I think it was felt that playing it safe was the best option following the hatred directed towards the prequels, which while poorly written, did try to do something different (and the third one was actually pretty decent).

People's reactions to TLJ has become a watermark on whether that person and I are on the same wavelength. I understand people not liking it, it's different and knowingly so, but I just don't think I'm ever going to see eye to eye with people who hate it with a passion.

Thor Ragnarok.

Although Thor is not really a character I would have bought a comic for, enjoyed all of the previous films and this is no exception.

As many have said, this does have a lot of funny moments in, is a good film but I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Not sure if the problem is that we have become oversaturated with Marvel films, the trailers revealed too many of the good bits or that very little of the film centred around the main plot.

So yeah, a solid film that for various reasons I'm only giving a 7. Going into this blind and not feeling a bit Marvel fatigued and you'd be looking at an 8 or 9.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again - 9/10

Feel free to judge me, but I couldn't give two hoots, this is just a fantastically entertaining movie.

If you don't sit through this with a grin in your face then there must be something fundamentally wrong with you!

Seen a bit of the first movie when I was at my mum's last weekend. I found it weird that she stole her mum's diary and read about her sex life.

Everyone was so bad at singing in the first film though

Dark Knight Rises: 6/10

Hadn't watched it in its entirety since seeing it in the cinema on release. Turns out my first impressions were accurate: overly long, overly complex, overly dull. The first hour is fine, but as soon as the weird nuke story kicks off it all goes to gooseberry fool. Bane is a comedy villain and Batman himself is dull as fuuuuuuck. The only decent thing about it is the interpretation of the Lazarus Pit and Anna Hathaway's Catwoman.

Easily Nolan's worst film, simply because there's so little of him in it. Could have been directed by anyone.
