Last film you watched and your rating

Finally got round to watching Early Man last night. It's always strange watching animated films and trying to pick out the voice actors - Most of the top billed cast you can't actually recognise (Tom Hiddleston sounds like Ewan Mcgregor in Beauty and the Beast, and Maisie Williams just sounds... odd). Spotted Mr Weasley, though :shifty:

It's a really good film, too. It's got a great sense of humour. I'm still chuckling at the "Take him away, and kill him. Slowly" scene thinking about it now. And the giant duck :slol:

There's a few obviously CGI-enhanced scenes, but I'm so glad Aardman have gone back to claymation as their main form of animation. There's a lot of character to the fingerprint-marked models.

It's got some good songs, though, and staging the songs almost as scenes playing out in Roxie's imagination was clever. Richard Gere has such a strange singing voice, though :slol:

Better than Mamma Mia. But that isn't saying much.

Tomb Raider (2018) - 6/10

Am i the only one who got the feeling they had seen it before? I mean the bit with the Tomb opening was very similar to Raiders Of The Last Ark.

Black Panther.

Killmonger - in regards to his personal motive and beliefs - makes him one of the more compelling villains in the MCU. The third act felt a bit bloated though (could've easily cut Everett's escapades in the ship) and I was disappointed to see Ulysses (Andy Serkis' character) go out the way that he did.

Overall it's more great Marvel shenanigans, enhanced by particularly compelling conflict/drama which make it a cut above many others.

Grand Budapest Hotel - 7/10

I liked it, but it didn't ever reach that point where it blew my mind.

I liked how stylised the film was, the little animated sequences were kind of cool. Ralph Fiennes was superb as always. Saiorse Ronan has a beautiful accent.

I watch and enjoy a lot of World War II films but this one was very different because it was from the perspective of Norway which made it very interesting

Saw this last night I felt it just dragged on for too long. Henry Cavill was so emotionless and didn't add anything to the character imo.

After watching it, did you start to think, Scientology might not be so bad?

The incredibles 2 - 8/10

As good as the first. Focused more on elastagirlthis time around and Jac-Jac gets plenty of air time.
Comedy aimed at all ages, I can’t see anyone watching it without laughing once.

Mission Impossible: Fallout

Went into this almost completely blind. All I remember from the trailer is a shot of a helicopter about to crash into a truck. Turns out that wasn't even in the film.
Also a bit annoying that they show spoilers of all the action scenes during the opening credits, had to look away for a minute.

The film itself is very well made with some nice ideas and twists, and really well-shot action set-pieces.
Maybe not quite as good as the hype suggests, but still a very decent action film.

Nah I said whilst watching it was very Indiana Jonesy, which is understandable. I mean the whole book part is straight Last Crusade

Empire Strikes Back - 9/10

My introduction of the kids to Star Wars continued last night as we watched Empire and I'm pleased to say that they enjoyed this much more than A New Hope! :toot:

It's not hard to see why either, this really is a much better film that Episode IV in pretty much every way with the biggest improvement almost certainly being the pacing. There is a really well honed rhythm to this film that ensures it doesn't fall into the same pitfalls of dull-ness as the original did. Empire manages to ensure that at pretty much all times something of note is happening in terms of either action, character or story.

It still looks great for the most part as well, although annoyingly it seems that the only versions of these films available online now are the ones where Lucas shat CGI all over them so there were a few moments that looked ropier than they did back in the day.

The kids enjoyed it a lot but obviously it is a darker movie than the first so there was the odd unsettling moment for them. Hopefully the Ewoks in RoTJ will cheer them up again! :lol:

Godzilla (2014)

Liked this less than the first time I watched it a few years ago. Killing off Bryan Cranston's character so early was dumb when he really should have been the main character rather than Aaron Taylor-Johnson's generic military bro. Maybe I was in an irritable mood when I watched it, but literally every single scene focusing on children is gooseberry fool. Every one involving the main character's creepy-looking little boy who looks like he's straight from a demonic posession horror film. The child who gets separated from his parents then immediately isn't really bothered. The strawberry floating STUPID tsunami scene where a ton of folk are presumably drowned but god forbid the little girl dies so let have her and her dad escape into a building with amazing watertight glass windows and doors. Wish that stupid little dog from that pointless scene died too.

All the Godzilla scenes are great though and the one when he first uses his atomic breath is just

Kong: Skull Island

First time I've seen this. Was expecting it to have a similar vibe to Godzilla but was surprised by how light hearted it all was and by some of the comedy deaths. Tom Hiddleston's character seemed pretty pointless and his role in the story could have easily just been Toby Kebell's character. Like Cranston in Godzilla, seeing John Goodman killed off so early was a bit annoying. Had no idea John C. Reilley was in this so that was a nice surprise and his character was exactly what I expected :lol:

I liked how Kong's design was less silverback and more human-like. Those other monsters just looked like generic video game designs though. [6.5]

Pacific Rim: Uprising.

Wasn't expecting anything amazing as i wasn't keen on the original, yet i actually liked it a lot more. It was dumber than the first film, yet the action was better (the switch from night to day meant i could actually properly see what was going on in the battles), and the characters were generally a lot more likeable.

This is going to sound ridiculous, but I broke down in tears at the end of 2049. I dont know even know why, it's the second time watching and it didn't have that effect the first time. :lol:

Starting to think it might be the best film I've ever seen.
