Last film you watched and your rating

I actually cannot read anything Hornby writes, something about his style makes me irrationally angry. Probably the most overrated author writing today.

The Rover

Sparse, moody, tense and gripping. A slow, atmospheric road trip punctuated by moments of swift, brutal violence. Guy Pearce is predictably excellent, but Robert Pattinson is terrific, too - a very pleasant surprise.

Hardly the feelgood film of the year, but it's a good deal better than some of the sniffy reviews suggested. [8]

Good to see you liked this, as I had hoped Michod wouldn't fluff his second one. Did Partos add anything to the atmosphere with his soundtrack? Loved his for Animal Kingdom.

Killers

A Japanese-Indonesian challenger to Korea's grip on the Killer Thriller, doesn't quite get to the lofty heights of I saw The Devil, but pretty close. Some silly or unbelievable scenes threaten to spoil it (almost the same way as in The Yellow Sea), but they're infrequent, and its focus on the mindset of a psychopathic murderer, and the descent of another man towards that mindset, are very well played out. Very unsettling. Great ending.

Yeah, the soundtrack's really good. There are quite a number of dialogue-free scenes that Partos gets to fill, and the results are often strange and unsettling.

I still think Animal Kingdom is marginally the better of the two films, but it's closer than some critics have said. They share a number of things in common - unhurried pacing, strong atmosphere, great central performances, and the violence is sharp and shocking, not drawn out.

Ah man, this was showing at the Glasgow Film Festival this year and I missed out, will have to hunt down a copy.

Guardians of the Galaxy - 7/10

Great characters, humour and action but I think it suffers a little from having to set up so much stuff.

It has to introduce 5 heroes, the cosmic universe, Planets, mythology, nova corps background, villains and motivation etc.

Having never read any comics and knowing nothing about GotG I felt it sometimes went a little over my head with exposition, probably because it didn't have 4 seperate films to lay the background...

Villains fell flat and their motive was pretty lame. Plus the monologing at the end

However it was a triumph in characterisation despite relatively little screen time to develop them. Groot absolutely stole it for me, closely followed by rocket and star lord.

My fiancé who has little interest in sci fi or action films came away having enjoyed it and likening it to a modern Star Wars, so in that sense it was a great achievement.

I was also impressed with how many stars were in this, I assumed it was a bit niche for some but it's set up a good foundation for sequels.

Good Will Hunting - 9/10

United 93 - 9.3/10

(Well, probably a 4 and an 8 for each but that's not in their names)

Anchorman 2 - 6/10

Was fairly good, but nowhere near as good as the first one.

The Expendables 3 - 6/10

The end of this movie was great, it was exactly what I wanted from the movie. The middle of it was kinda boring. I could not stop yawning. The young people sucked ass for the most part.

The second movie is still the most entertaining to me.

Sin City 2

I really enjoyed it although the first is definitely a better film down to pacing issues as well as the better variety of stories in the first film. JGL's story was definitely the best thing about it but I really wish they'd had his final scene play after Nancy's story to finish the film on a high. Dwight's story was the main cause of the pacing issue and seems like it could've been easily fixed. A better show down in a different set or tying Ray Liotta into the story would've helped. But yes, overall I liked it and it still has that amazing comic book come to life style.

As with Machete Kills, however, Lady Gaga is effing terrible and can't deliver a line to save her life. What's the story behind her casting?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier - 8.5/10

Really enjoyed that, I haven't seen GotG yet, but this might be my favourite Marvel so far.

Ghostbusters - 9.5/10

Still as amazing as it was in the 80s.

In the Loop - 7/10

I couldn't take most of the characters seriously, the MP was just too stupid. Gandolfini was good but it was the two Scottish lunatics that made it for me. Malcolm Tucker is obviously great, but the other one was just as funny/scary.

I get what people were saying about crap CGI, those helicopters
