Does Ben Kingsley have a reputation for being a banana split? I always that he was generally well liked.

I think that stemmed from his once-insistence that his 'Sir' prefix is used in interviews, or at least film posters, can't quite remember.

Tales From Earthsea

x ∞

The worst Ghibli film without question! What a shame, I liked it enough the first time seeing it some years ago...but it bored me to tears on this rewatch; even the typically delightful production values can't save an overly simplistic and dull script.

5/10

Ides of March - 9/10

Absolute beast. And not just because Ryan Gosling is in it.

They need to make a film where Ryan Gosling goes about in a suit killing people with a silenced pistol while it plays cool dark electronic music. Like a James Bond type role.

Holy moly, I was not expecting that. All I knew going in was that this was something of a box office flop and had Keith Davis in it. I certainly didn't think I'd get the best 2D Disneymation I've seen since the Lion King. strawberry floating spectacular; up there with the Miyazaki stuff as one of the best looking animations I've ever seen, with absolutely knock-out music and a plot that had me tearing up multiple times. What a crime that it was ignored at the cinema.

I was ridiculed for taking three other twenty-odd year old guys with me to see this at the cinema.

I didn't care - it was up there with some of their 90s output and a huge return to form.

The Hunt - *****

Mads Mikkelsen in this is just outstanding. Really gripping story. Amazing.

I can't remember when but I seemed to remember him being pretty patronising and condescending about what he thought were 'real actors' in 'real roles' and how he thought he was basically God's gift to entertainment.

It was pretty rich coming from someone who starred in Bloodrayne, anyway.

12 Years a Slave - ****

Never got round to seeing Shame or Hunger so this was my first Steve McQueen film, he's proper good ain't he! A great film, really well made, but it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. Fassbender was as fantastic as I had heard but I was a little disappointed with Ejiofor's role. He was great, don't get me wrong, but he didn't actually do much. For the most part he was just there for others to act around - which can work really well in this kind of films led by a single character, but I don't think he was given much to do on his own.

Brad Pitt's inclusion was strange too. His first scene was terribly acted on his part, and given the only anti-slavery white character an Abe Lincoln beard is incredibly on the nose. His second scene was fine though, and pivotal, it just should have been given to another actor who didn't also happen to be a producer.

If Chiwetel Ejiofor doesn't get a Best actor Oscar for his performance in 12 Years A Slave I would be shocked.

12 Years A Slave 9/10

Brad Pitt smad pitt, it was all Ejiofor.
