Well that was a bit unpleasant. Actually not a terrible film and the gf enjoyed the revenge scenes far more than she should have. Found the abuse scenes a bit gratuitous though, and thought they went on a bit too long.

Girl is hot though, and there's satisfying revenge to be had.

6/10.

If you 'liked' that film, watch The Last House on the Left.

I think "liked" in quotes is the best way to put it.

I think I watched that a few years back with a different GF, seem to remember that one having a gratuitous abuse scene right at the start as well which also went on for a bit too long!

I must be getting old, I never used to be sensitive about stuff like that, but during the "main" scene in ISOYG I was just thinking OK enough already, we get the idea does this really need to be shown for so long.

Just discovered there's a sequel, but think I need to watch a few romcoms first... :dread:

The Yellow Sea - 8/10 I can't lie, I got a bit lost off towards the end, but it was very good
Millers Crossing - 5/10 Pretty dull to be honest, don't really go for period pieces like that, unless it's called The Untouchables
Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter...and Spring - 6/10 Pretty directionless, but still quite absorbing

Oh no! Those last two were my recommendations! :(

Oh well, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy them so much. I think 'absorbing' is an excellent way to describe 'Spring, Summer….', though.

And 'Miller's Crossing' a '5'?! What is this? You giving me the high hat?! ;)

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.

The Inbetweeners 2 - 5/10

Not as good as the first, and took a while to get going. However, the ripping on travelers was hilarious and bang on the money. Utter banana splits.

There were some rather funny moments though.

Captain America 2

So amazing. Even better than when I saw it at the cinema. The action scenes are breath taking and the winter soldier looks so cool.

The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug - 7/10

Better than the first, but still so much wrong with it. No real ending, again. The first half hour felt almost like a montage, it didn't feel like it had even started until they were well within Mirkwood. Bjorn came and went in the blink of an eye. And again the strawberry floating CG. The fight in Bard's house was awesome, because it was actors. But then they go outside and all it's all Legolas surfing on CGI dudes while shooting arrows through CGI dudes. The barrel sequence was cool, but once more you can just see that they're cutting air then editing in all the orcs later. If all the fights could have been to half the standard of the showdown at the end of Fellowship this film would be ten times better.

Smaug was brilliant, where Bilbo confronts him. The general adventuring was fun, and same as the first the backstory stuff absent from the book was all great.

Alright, alright, outrage at the Miller's Crossing score. I don't really like Coen brothers movies as much as most people, probably why. The plot was a bit dense.

The Innkeepers - 3/10

Pointless. Sara Paxton is cute as strawberry float, but other than that, nothing of note happened. At all. Complete waste of time.

To be honest, there's no point in watching literally any other film in the rape/revenge genre because they are all absolutely identical.

Unless you're going to for something really on the fringe like Irreversible (which is difficult to even put in the same category as something like I Spit on Your Grave) or something like Gutterballs which is just strawberry floating horrible then pretty much every film in the genre is largely indistinguishable from each other.

The fringes of rape/revenge has quite a few interesting films though like The Vengeance Trilogy, Hard Candy, Pulp Fiction and even Titus if you want to go back to Shakespeare or The Virgin spring if you want to go back to the start of the genre.

The genre itself may be repetitive and largely uninteresting but the way it's changed by stuff like Irreversible is often fascinating

True, but those are some pretty stretched fringes to start including Hard Candy and Pulp Fiction under the same umbrella as Last House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave.

Also, just finished Transformers Extinction.

God that was long.

Straw Dogs is sort of a rape/revenge film. And good.

How did Transformers Extinction fit into the rape/revenge genre?

His childhood was raped by Michael Bay, now he seeks revenge. Film comes out next Spring.

Thought it was better than the first actually, a solid 6/10 even if the bits about travellers hit a little too close to home. My friend actually turned to me halfway through and told me if I could play guitar I'd be the dreadlock wanker to a tee. Made me all sad.

Anyway.

Godzilla (2014) 3/10

Utter, utter toss and a massive disappointment after the amazing trailers. How on earth a movie this huge was greenlit with a script as bad as this is beyond me. It suffered from exactly the same problems as it's 90s predecessor: an over reliant focus on, and under done characterisation of, the humans characters. I couldn't have cared less about the marine and his family if I tried, they were as two dimensional and cliched as you like, but they were the fulcrum the movie hinged on for some reason.

The direction also annoyed me. Although it was quite beautiful, Edwards' decision to not once, but twice cut away from monster fights as they began had me clenching my fist in frustration. A bad decision once is annoying, to do it twice is flipping off the viewer. When the fight did finally happen it was a background device to the most boring last-chance-dash in recent blockbuster memory. The hero marine (can't remember his name) said it'd take him 60 seconds to disarm the bomb. When they reach it, there's 27 minutes left. But wait! The panel to get to the detonator is a bit stiff! Rather than, I dunno, getting an iron bar from the wreckage and levering it off they decide to waste what time they have carting it literally across the entire city. I could go on and on with a list of utterly stupid and unbelievable leaps the script makes. On and on.

I'm going to say it: the 90s Godzilla was better.

The bit about travellers was almost literally the only good bit. You're insane in the mind.

Europa Report - 7/10

How so?

I thought for the most part it was realistic.

Do you often contemplate the complexity of life?
