Aubrey Plaza :dread:

She can do as she pleases

I watched Safety Not Guaranteed the other day, really enjoyed it and love Aubrey Plaza even more than before

Been watching Parks and Rec a lot recently as well, can't avoid her.

Tried watching Manhattan last night and gave up. Wasn't enjoying it and found all the characters annoying, bar Woody Allen's. Might give it another shot when I'm feeling more intelectual.

Like seeing old friends for the first time in 10 years. It was an absolute joy to be in Jesse and Celine's presence again. Their "bullshitting" as they call it is as fresh and funny as ever, with many profundities thrown in there for good measure.

A joyous experience.

Great stuff. Gonna see that next week.

Interestingly I thought Lars (and Half Nelson) were dull as strawberry float upon first viewing. Improved on the second, but not to the level where I'd want to watch them again.

I've not seen Half Nelson, I do expect it to be slow and plodding with nothing happening, I'm putting it off for a while. I didn't think Lars was dull, the premise alone is intriguing enough to sustain interest until the half way point. I thought he was brilliant in it because it's a real character role where he can't just rely on his presence and mumbling charm, it's such a contrast to his other parts. He does his quiet intensity thing really well, his timing and delivery are so good, like in his first conversation with a girl who likes him, he's holding a rose that had just been given to him and immediately launches it away to his left as soon as she speaks to him. When she runs out of things to say, he finishes with 'ok bye' at rapid speed. I don't think another actor would have performed it with the same acute sharpness that he does, his comedic timing is great, i was really impressed. It's an amazing depiction of a lonely man, his uneasiness whilst at work in the company of women is so good.

I also liked him in Fracture. He's different to other actors, the way he deliveries his lines, the tone of his voice, there's a naturalness to him that means he can do indies but he has a charisma to be the leading man. There's an in-the-moment vitality about his presence in films. He doesn't feel formulaic or cliched, he doesn't try to 'act', he's like how actors describe child actors who haven't been taught, when they don't over think things, and just 'are'. He's carried that through to adulthood, whilst hiding a skill for timing.

But yeah I demand everyone watch The Believer. I was mesmerized by large parts of it. I'm disappointed that he's taking a break from acting because he says he's getting a bit sick of himself, and needs to step back from it for a while, but again i think that explains his attitude to the job that's not just 'find role, do, repeat' that a lot of actors get trapped in to with diminishing returns. I think he's pretty similar to Heath Ledger, and like him i want him to take on a sinister role.

The Fast and Furious 6
Meh. Very boring really, even the action scenes weren't very interesting and too stupid to be believable, plus they forgot to CGI out the wires in some places :fp:
Loses an extra 2 marks at the end, one for the twist that everyone in the film is religious, the 2nd for sticking Jason Statham in the film and presumably the next film too.

World War Z - 8/10

Surprisingly good. Lots of tension, Brad Pitt was a great choice for lead and the finale was superb. It reminded me quite a bit of the 28 Days/Weeks Later films and I'd be more than happy to see a sequel. Only thing was, no gore or blood. Which made the zombies a little comedic towards the end.

I've heard the entire film is basically just an advert for Google. Do you feel more inclined to buy/use Google products now?

TBH I thought it made a refreshing change and I preferred the more tension slant to it as you've already pointed out.

WWZ. Such a forgettable film, almost criminal the lack of use of material from the book. Leaves a glimmer of hope for more interesting sequels I suppose. Only thing that sticks in my head a day after seeing it is how easily the wife could have been a stand in for Gollum if Serkis was sick.

This years blockbusters so far have been so bland it's putting me off going to the cinema.

Safe - 7.5/10
Cheesy cliché ridden action film. Liked it. I didn't realise until the last 10 minutes that Jason Statham was trying to do a Brooklyn accent. He just sounded like Jason Statham. His accent was almost as bad as Colin Farrell in Miami Vice.

They added more than I expected, and the family dynamic was very well acted in a part of the story that could have been trite.

Brad Pitt dangling in his seat after the crash reminded me of the pilot in the tree part of the book, the airport in Korea section the start of the pandemic in the book and the mentioning of North Korea doing dark was, well, part of the book.

I agree, they missed some of the best political moves from the book which were really good, but it had more references than I thought there would be.

The King of Kong - ****

Absolutely brilliant and unnerving at the same time. There was something very unsettling about that whole group of people, apart from Steve Wiebe.

yeah it is lol. Tbh the film made me feel a bit depressed for some reason and no it won't make me use more google products. It doesn't really glorify google/android etc.

That guy was just downright creepy. He looked so upset that this outsider was coming in and going to Donkey Kong better than him. I'm convinced Billy Mitchell built his wife too.
