Fargo Season 3 8/10: I don't think it quite hit the heights of the first two series, but still very enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the VM Varga character, and his rants.

Varga is probably the best character they've had in any of the series and this one ended incredibly strongly but yeah, it took a while to get going.

Just finished part 1 of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - This has the potential to become one of the best anime series I've seen.

Finished season 1 of Peaky Blinders last night - pretty good, although I thought it was a bit silly how Tommy got shot in the chest, had a drink and then he's fine. Looking forward to watching season 2, although I expect the whole thing will run out of steam before too long.

The Genius (Season 1) - 9/10

Fantastic South Korean reality gameshow where celebrities compete to win a cash prize by playing various logic and puzzle games.

Each week consists of a main game and a "deathmatch".

The main game changes each week and takes many forms. One week it's a card game, another it's an auction game. On a couple of weeks they play simplified versions of Werewolf/Mafia style games. Alliances are made and broken and there's a lot of duplicitous back room dealings. Someone who helped you in the last episode might now be working behind your back. Each player also has "Garnets", each of which is worth £1000 (Or there abouts), which can be used to help influence other players and are even important in some of the main games and deathmatches. The number of Garnets the overall winner has at the end of the season determines their ultimate prize money.

The loser of the main game progresses to the "deathmatch" where they can pick another player to challenge. The Deathmatch tends to be a simpler game but with a twist. One that appears in season 1 is the winning streak game, where each elimination candidate plays Rock, Paper, Scissor with all the remaining players. Whoever gets the longest streak of wins, survives. Again though, alliances and influence play a big part in this.

The loser of the deathmatch is eliminated and the winner takes any garnets they have. The winner of the main game cannot be picked for the deathmatch and can also save one other player from it.

Utterly engrossing stuff that is very well edited. You can go a whole episode thinking you know how something is going to play out, only for it to pull something out of the hat at the last minute. The celebrities are a decent bunch and unlike western "reality" shows they're not a bunch of squawking, vapid morons. The games themselves are quite good too, and definitely reward clever thinking and creative application of the game rules.

It's got a good heart to it as well, with some touching moments and others that are genuinely funny.

The first season is on Youtube in it's entirety (See link below) and I can't recommend it enough. DML should be making a UK version of this show.

strawberry floating loved Sangmin. :D

The relationship between him and Sunggyu was brilliant. Especially the times he tries to suck up to him.

EDIT: The show's too good to be confined here. I might have to start a thread for it later on.

One of my favourite recurring season one themes is Sung-Gyu's perceived lack of intellect. There's at least three episodes where everyone seems to disregard him as a threat only for him to end up being stone cold.

The only disappointment for me is that once Kyung-ran makes it into the final two with Jin-ho, you know he will win because she hasn't displayed any killer instinct at all throughout and has played very passively.

So many great main matches as well in that season.

Yeah I loved that about Sung-Gyu. Didn't think I'd like him much but he grew on me.

Yeah when it got to the final I was pretty sure it was going to be Jin-ho that won. It was a shame because as the episodes went on I really didn't want him to win.

Favourites were easily Sangmin and Eunji

Loved that show. I think S2 dipped a little but S3 and S4 were just as good as the first season.
There was talk of a UK version and they even made a hype trailer to try and drum up interest but it seems to have not got anywhere.

All the links used to be on Dailymotion but looks like they've been taken down now. Might be able to get them at this Reddit page instead: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheGenius/comm ... enius_s14/

Altered Carbon

This has received some mixed feedback on here, the first few episodes in particular but I have to say this had me hooked from the very beginning. I thought the world in which it was set was innovative but believable, and it looks phenomenal. Someone earlier in the thread said that it looked cheap in places, I don't think you could be any further from the truth.

The cast were generally decent and I thought the story was gripping and led in an interesting direction throughout. I'm not sure if this was down to the quality of the writing (certainly it seems to be more unpopular with critics) or if this show just seemed to hit the right notes for me personally. Either way, best new show I've seen since Westworld.

8/10

That was me. My issue was with the cinematography and direction really. It was always clear how much money they'd thrown at it a but the way it was shot (overly saturated colours, uninteresting angles and cuts) was what made it look like a SyFy series.

Compare it to a series like Dark, a German series with a fraction of the budget, and you realise how bad it looks.

Dark blew 90% of its budget on the water bill.

"What should the weather be in this scene?"
"Rain... lots of rain"
"Again?"
"BITCH MAKE IT RAIN!!"

And clocks.

Water and clocks. Good alternative title, that.

I mean, I haven't seen Dark yet (someone here mentioned a similarity to Stranger Things which put me off a bit) but based on that trailer I don't see how those two series are comparable at all.

Don't be put off by that comparison, it doesn't really make sense.

I think I preferred Altered Carbon to Dark and it is very clear that Dark is on a much lower budget. But it doesn't have a futuristic setting so a higher budget isn't necessary.

The Sopranos S4 – 10/10

This show seems to deliver one faultless season after another. This is the zenith of television.

There was a point in the season where I really, really felt that Ralphy and Tony had patched things up, despite Tony openly bestowing such obvious contempt for the guy. Thankfully, Tony eventually got his hands dirty because I really, really hated Ralphy.

With every passing episode I get progressively sadder about Gandolfini’s passing as he is genuinely incredible in this. I feel that the few times Tony is shown being genuinely loving and caring toward his family is a window into how Gandolfini was in life away from the screen. His performance this season in particular was stunning… but somehow, he was upstaged.

Edie Falco’s acting this season was absolutely astounding, genuinely some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. The scenes with Carmela and Furio were electric. The scene in the garage in ‘Whitecaps’ where Tony repeatedly rams his fist through the wall is perfect in so many ways but it’s Falco’s performance as Carmela, a housewife finally rebelling against the mob-boss husband that has treated terribly for years, that elevates it to a level unreachable to just about any other show. I haven’t bothered to check it out but I would be nothing short of speechless if she didn’t clear up during awards time for this season, in particular that episode.

Hoping S5 delivers more of the same.
