I'm not surprised Total Film has gone down, they kept dicking around with the prices, one month you'd find it was £4.50, another it would be £5.99, then it would be £4.99, and so on.

By doing that they lost me as a reader.

I've noticed the same thing with Official PlayStation - one month it's £5.99, then £6.99. Seems to depend on the "free" gift(s). Doesn't impact subscribers though, thankfully. But I can't see many impulse purchases at £7.

Well, although I always enjoy purusing the latest figures, I had forgotten the sense of disappointment they now bring. Man, games mags are struggling. Official Xbox down to 16k and Official PlayStation down to 23k? Incredible. I think the shelf price point of six quid is just too much for what you get - and I like the mags. But, hey, we've said all this before over the past few years.

I feel that a key reason for sales declines - for news and mags - is that most folk have, in their minds, totally devalued the worth of journalism. Heck, I did it in the paragraph above. "Youngsters", especially, have grown up being able to get news for free via the internet and, often, they appear to prefer small chunks of information to digest rather than anything in-depth. Not everyone, of course, but perhaps a big part of the population. The rise of social media tech channels has given people the capability to instantly share their own views on subjects far and wide; why would they pay to read somebody else's views?

Of course, this change has brought tremendous benefits but I do fear that large, paid, "recognisable" news outlets could gradually decline and that brings about concerns around in-depth investigation and quality. Even if, naturally, we may not always agree with what is written .

It's grim looking at numbers for titles like Top Gear and Wired continually declining. The fall for Top Gear is a bit odd because it's not like the old presenters contributed much to the magazine, maybe four pages in total so you'd think their departure wouldn't hurt the magazine that much.

Yeah... although, to be fair, that was about twenty years ago, Drummy . Very roughly, four quid in 1999 is equivalent to about £6.40 today.

I wonder when Sony and Microsoft will pull the plug on these mags, rather like when Nintendo did with their official title. I'd hate to see that happen but the circulation figures are getting pretty small now and I can just imagine the marketing teams comparing them to, say, their Twitter follower numbers. Future Publishing has never figured out a way of linking their paper-based mag audience with an online presence and I don't believe that they have the people or funds to do so nowdays. Very few magazine publishers have figured out a way of monetising their writing in an online format.

The only magazine I semi-regularly buy is New Scientist

I would say the games mag continued decline is depressing, but it's no where near as depressing as being reminded how many people read the Sun and the Mail

It'll be a shame when these big name magazines like Wired, EDGE and Empire disappear from stores...

...The Sun and The Star on the other hand...
