Modern Warfare 2 Captures Christmas No1
As with 2007 and 2008, week 51 is the final published chart before Christmas and this is therefore the Official Christmas Chart of 2009. So, in the final analysis, Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ remained No1 on the All Formats Chart for 6 straight weeks since tearing up all the records in week 46, all the way up to claiming the Christmas Chart No1 (+3%).
The anticipated surge on EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ brought the title up 3 places but not enough to dislodge the aforementioned Activision title, settling at No2 (+24%). However, EA can take comfort in the fact that an EA title has held the Christmas No1 11 times over the 25 years that we have been tracking videogame Christmas No1’s. For those with any interest in this ranking, the No2 behind EA in terms of Xmas No1’s? Ocean (3 times, 1988, 1989, 1991). Bringing us back to the present, Nintendo take 4 out of the Top 10 with Wii titles, 2 of which follow directly after ‘FIFA 10’ - ‘Wii Fit Plus’ at No3 (+9%) and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ at No4 (+0%) were both strong Christmas purchases.
Ubisoft are down 2 places to No5 with ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ (-5%), Sega are up one place to No6 with ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (+13%), Nintendo’s ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ is No7 (-1%), Microsoft’s ‘Forza Motorsport 3’ is No8 (+11%) and Nintendo’s ‘Mario Kart Wii’ is No9 (+12%). Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ continues to delight Wii customers with an interest in perfecting their moves, all at an impulse price point – the title drops 2 positions but rounds off the Christmas Top 10 (-18%). Also of note this week is Ubisoft’s ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ which is benefitting from an overload of advertising at present, both for the film and the game, plus the 360/PS3 versions this week saw around £10 off – the title rockets from No29 to No12 as the highest climber (+129%).
