Now the launch of Nintendo Switch is over and people have purchased what they want to, I wondered what the actual costs were. Before launch I saw a few comments about how expensive the new Nintendo console would be with everything added in, so what have people spent, what do they have to show for it and how does it compare to the other launches of the generation.

These are my launch costs for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.

Nintendo Switch
Console - £279.99
1-2 Switch - £32
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Special Edition - £79.85
Fast RMX - £17.99
Pro Controller - £54.99
Joy-Con Controller Pair with Snipperclips - £79.99

Total Cost - £544.81
4 games, 5 controllers, SE version of game.

PS4
Console (PS4 Gamer pack) - £429.99
Killzone Shadowfall - £0
Second PS4 controller - £0
PS4 Camera - £0
Resogun - £FREE with PS+
Contrast - £FREE with PS+

Total Cost - £429.99
3 games, 2 controllers

Xbox One
Xbox One Day One Edition - £429
Kinect - £0
Forza 5 - £0
Dead Rising 3 - £44.99
Need For Speed Rivals - Limited Edition - £38.99
Powerstar Golf - £15.99

Total Cost - £528.97
4 games, 1 controller

Are there any local 4 player games that require two Joy-Cons at the moment?

As far as I'm aware all the games I'm likely to get that support 4 player local MP will support single Joy-Con play.

This was a key factor in why I held off from the Switch... I knew I'd easily end up spending at least £500. I *almost* wavered in the first few days post-lauch, but looking at the figures now makes me think that I will be able to hold off for a long time.

For the PS4 launch I got the console, an extra controller, a stand, Assassins Creed Black Flag and Need for Speed Rivals. Oh, and the annual subscription. The costs always escalate far beyond the console-only price tag!

But in comparison you are getting more for your money.

I've only spent that much because I can afford to, if I couldn't you'd still get more for your money out of Switch than you would have done at the launch of either of the other consoles at launch.

More than... PS4 and XBO? i don't quite get that, HSH. I guess you're indicating that Zelda is an ace game whilst the other two machines didn't really have a stand-out title? Maybe. My point was more that *any* console is expensive at lauch, once you factor in the other kit that folk inevitably pick up.

Switch is the only home console I picked up at launch this generation, and I can't remember costs of anything else, but my Switch haul:

Nintendo Switch Console: £279.99
Pro Controller: £55
128 GB SD Card: £23.74
Tempered Glass Screen Protectors: £7.70 (hasn't arrived yet)
The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild: £42.11

Total: £408.54

I had £300 saved up for a Wii U, that I just never pulled the trigger on, so it went on the Switch, and it's already one of my favourite pieces of kit for some time, despite the flaws (many of which I can see them sorting out with updates). It was never a question of picking up a Switch or not for me, but a question of when. I wanted BOTW, didn't have a Wii U, I know I'll also pick up Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei, that new game from the Bravely Default / Second team, so for me the console was already worth the investment, knowing they are coming. A very easy decision for me. I can see the Switch performing well in Japan too, with the hybrid portable format, and getting a lot of titles that appeal to me.

How much would either a PS4 or Xbox One have cost at launch with 5 controllers and 4 games. Significantly more than I spent on Switch I think.

There are of course extras for any console, but out of the box you get more for your money with Switch than you did for either the PS4 or Xbox One launch in terms of functionality.

I really don't want to get into knocking the Switch but... are we judging the quality of games and controllers by cost? In that case, my C64 rules supreme :toot: .

No. I personally think the quality of games stacks up on its own. The controllers aren't an issue either.

The argument has nothing to do with quality, just the functionality you get for a certain price. There's nothing wrong with either the games or the controllers on Switch...perhaps this is a discussion for a different topic, but do you disagree?

I had planned to pick up Puyo-Puyo Tetris, Fast RMX and Shovel Knight but I've been so engrossed with Zelda, and short of time, that my launch haul is:

Neon Switch and Breath of the Wild bundle = £319.99
Snipperclips and Joy-Con bundle = £74.99

Total = £394.98

The Switch is the only console, other than the New 3DS, that I've ever bought at launch.

It's 5 only because the joy cons could be counted as 2 as you can use them individually. Really it is 2 sets of cons and a pro if I'm reading it right.

Seems like most games supporting 4 player local play support a single Joy-Con as a control method, at least the ones I can think of at the moment do (there aren't that many).

I'd suggest that if someone can play with a single Joy-Con on the majority of those games, there's no real reason to think of it as not a full controller.
