Why was Super Mario Bros a US NES launch title yet Europe got regular Mario Bros instead?

Super R-Type wasn't a SNES launch game. The other 3 were the only launch titles.

Are you sure? I got the SNES on launch day, and I remember having to choose the second game...I could have sworn R-Type was there...But it is a long time ago :fp:

The second game I ended up getting on launch was Super Tennis, and I got F-Zero much later on.

According to that Wikipedia page...

Super Famicom/SNES

Japanese launch: November 21, 1990
F-Zero
Super Mario World

U.S. launch: August 19, 1991
F-Zero
Gradius III
Pilotwings
SimCity
Super Mario World

European launch: April 11, 1992
F-Zero
Super Mario World
Super Tennis

Release date for Super R-Type in Europe was 4th June 1992.

Exactly, European launch was after US launch, so why did we get lumped with and older inferior game?

Ah, then maybe R-Type wasn't there.

I 100% remember Super Tennis and F-Zero being there as I had a real dilemma choosing between them...

The SNES UK launch was a huge surprise, as it came out of the blue. I remember having pre-ordered it from Toys R us months earlier, then one day I got a call saying it had launched and I could pick it up...

No, Super Mario Bros didn't come out till May 87 here. Its just the way things were then, Europe was an afterthought. The NES released in Europe over 3 years after the Famicom in Japan.

Definitely the Xbox 360. 2nd best COD of its generation, the 2nd best racing game of its generation, the 2nd best downloadable in Geometry Wars, a great horror game...that Perfect Dark was a big disappointment a few weeks later made no difference.

Vita came close to matching it though.

I'm sorry but it wasn't very good.

I didn't have an N64 back then. When you were playing that, I was playing proper FPS games that ran at a decent speed with a decent draw distance.

Turok looked terrible in comparison...and it was.

GameCube shows that although you have no killer app, you can have a lot of steady titles and have a good launch. I wasn't excited for any of those games really at launch, and yet Super Monkey Ball in particular turned out to be one of the best games on the console.

What? What "proper" FPS were you playing? I liked Turok quite a lot. Good choice of weapons let down in the main by lack of save points.

Yes?

I imagine he's referring to PC games. Quake came out around that time.

Quake was out the year before, Quake 2 came out later that year as did Dark Forces 2. Half Life came out the following year.

There was quite a lot of progress around that time. The only N64 FPS I personally think still stands up is GoldenEye (I don't even like Perfect Dark and around that time PC players got Deus Ex).

To be fair there is no concrete date for the NES launch in the UK, some parts of Europe got the NES in late 86, however the UK launch is 1987 but no actual date. I've been researching this and currently have it between February and April.

I am trying to get the UK launch details documented but with Matel being the company that distributed the console makes it hard as when I reached out to them they said they no longer held records for that product. Nintendo have just late 1986 for when they distributed the NES in other European countries.

Neither Quake or Quake 2 attempted outside environments. Comparing them anyway is laughable, how much would have a PC and monitor cost to play them compared to an N64? I got my first PC in 93, 433mhz costing £1,200.

I guess he won't be getting a Switch as nothing on it will be "proper" like a 3 grand PC with VR.

Yes?

It does seem strangely tough to pin down the launch dates of both the NES and the Master System in the UK. This may help, though...

In the summer of '87 I had just left school and, in the months before I started college, I was using my summer-job money to save up and buy either a NES or a Master System. Neither had launched at the time but they were expected to arrive soon - official launches, not imported versions.

The first time I saw one of the machines was when I bought my Master System in late August 1987; I believe I picked it up within the first couple of days if it being available in the UK. It came with a Hang-On game card and I bought the My Hero game card as well. During the next couple of weeks the Master System and games became widely available.

The NES arrived a short time later... I'd pin it as being around October 1987. I remember seeing ads in the gaming mags but it was not stocked as widely as the Master System was (Mastertronic distributed the MS and did a terrific job!) and the MS remained the more popular machine.

Hope this helps, Suzz!

I won't be getting one to play games like that...which is a good thing because it doesn't look like there are going to be any games like that.

Cheers Jawa, I managed to find a Toys R Us leaflet that had the NES available with the leaflet dated May'87, why is this so hard to nail down?
