Hello chaps. I saw a poll on football365 which was clearly trying to judge their readership demographic by asking where their team finished in their respective league last season. About 85% supported teams in the top four. 85%! That's mental.

I want to find out what our demographic is here. I suspect it will be similar. But for this thread to work I want you to give your reason for supporting your team. Or tell us about the first game you went to.

I support west ham. My first visit to upton park was against Everton in 1994 and they beat us 1-0 with Tony Cottee grabbing the goal. It was awful. My dad was angry and we were high up without even having a seat.

Your turn.

Coventry City, so league one. Support them because my Dad does and they were my local team growing up.

But they play in Northampton now, because football is strawberry floated up.

Sunderland. Although I grew up in Cheltenham, my parents are both from the north east and I was brought up into it.

My first football game would have been a Cheltenham Town match back when they were in the Dr Marten's league, but I can't remember it. My first Sunderland game was Reading away in 1997. We had just been relegated from the Premiership the previous year and were still acclimatising to the first division. By that I mean we were hopeless and lost 4-0.

The thing is, when 85% of the media focus on the "big" clubs, and when 85% of televised matches feature one of those clubs - is it any surprised people support them?

Is it any surprise that people who aren't perhaps in close proximity to a club (or at least, a league club) or those who don't have a family tradition of supporting a team or can't afford to go to their local side pick these teams up? They will go for a)the teams that are on TV b) the teams which have plenty of other fans and c) the teams that have a media circus around them constantly. It also just happens that these teams are successful, which helps maintain an interest in them. That success is why a), b) and c) happen.

You aren't exactly going to pick Bolton, are you?

Anyway, I support Middlesbrough. I am from the area, and my Grandfather and Father supported them. I was first taken to a game in 1992/93. We were beaten 3-2 by Villa at home, and I have hated Glowy ever since.

You might want to edit that post Parksey. But I totally take your point. The globalisation of the football brand is probably going to cause football to eat itself completely. Being a glory hunter has far more damaging implications than it seemed when we were kids.

Swansea.

First game in 1993, when I was 7. They were in Division 2 (League 1) and drew 1-1 thanks to a late equaliser from Stephen Jenkins. My Mum had packed me a rucksack of stuff in case I got bored much to my Dad's dismay, but it wasn't needed as I was hooked.

Since then I've:

Suffered two relegation from Division Two/League One
Enjoyed two promotions from Division Three/League Two and one from League One as Champions
Been to old Wembley twice, once to win the Autoglass Trophy, once to go out on penalties in the Division Three playoff final
Been to the Millennium Stadium, once to win the LDV Van trophy, once to go out on penalties in the League One playoff final (small pattern there)
Been to new Wembley twice, once to watch us promoted to the Premier League, once to win the League Cup
Been to Naples to watch them crash out of the Europa League

However, the standout game was when I was about 16 in 2002, and we had to beat Hull to stay in the league. It was after an incredibly turbulent time off the field where the fans had managed to oust Tony Petty, a crook who was just in it to make a profit. We were taken over by fans who have steered us well since but that day was a huge moment in the club's history. Brilliantly, people like Roberto Martinez and Leon Britton played, who went on to have a huge impact on the club going forward. That day however, I remember so many details and the feeling when James Thomas audaciously chipped the Hull keeper from 30 yards to secure our football league position will always stay with me.

The Swansea that has held their own in the Premier League for the last 3 years is a far cry from the club I knew growing up, and while you'd never trade that position, I have such fond memories of being gooseberry fool

Manchester City, because my family does.

My first game was a 2-0 win over QPR in February 1996 which I don't remember much about.

Nottingham Forest - Because I live 5 minutes from the ground and my dad supports them. I can't remember my first game but my first season ticket was for the 95/96 season.

My second team is Borussia Dortmund - Because in the early 2000 they had Koller (one of my favourite players of all time) and Rosicky. Subsequently managed them on FM a lot. Finally committed to fully following them (i.e. watch games, highlights and read articles) around 2008/09 (coinciding with Klopp). First game was in 2011 when Dortmund beat Nuremburg 2-0 to secure their first Bindesliga under Klopp - incredible experience.

I support Spurs. I grew up in North London(Muswell Hill and Barnet) , one side of my family supported chelsea and arsenal the other Spurs. My Grandad and Great Uncle who had been going to white hart lane for years and years bought me a spurs bag at a young age ,they told me of all the great football over the years and played football with me lots as a kid. My first game was spurs against arsenal back in 1990 at white hart lane which was a draw, due to moving quite a distance away i didn't see many games at white hart lane from the age of about 18 till i was 23 but when i moved to Norwich when i was 23-/24 and met a few friends who were all Spurs fans we started going to matches and i go to about 5 matches a season now.

West Ham. Reason being that, when I was growing up, all I ever heard off both my dad and my older brother was 'Man United are the best, Man United this, that and the other', and I got a bit cheesed off with it. Then, I happened to be watching a match between Man United and West Ham, and it finished 0-0. Me, being young and stupid, thought that this meant the teams were of equal calibre and, in a moment of rebellion, I pledged that from that day forward I would support West Ham. Yes, I know NOW. Anyways, that was over twenty years ago and I've stuck with them through thin and thinner and the thought of supporting anyone else makes me gag. I did support my local team, week-in week-out, for a good few years, back in the mid-nineties, but I soon become disillusioned with the imbalance between the expense and the quality of football. For further proof of this, Google 'Hereford United'.

Aston Villa, so bottom half.

I've supported them since I was 8, and because they were the only local team I knew of (technically I lived closer to Birmingham City, but I hadn't heard of them).

There have been good times and bad times (mostly bad times), but I wouldn't support any other club.

Same.

I'm a St Mirren fan. Not my local team (Coventry is my second team, by birth/geography), but I think I can duck under the 'glory supporter' tag. Though having said that, my first Saints game was the 1987 Cup Final win.

I was brainwashed as a child by my Grampa, who had had three daughters with no interest in football. I was the first grandchild, so was 'blessed' with being a St Mirren fan. I was bought a St Mirren strip three days after I was born, though it was a couple of years before I could wear it, and even then, it was a touch too big:

Supporting a rubbish football team has affected my outlook on life, and I certainly can't understand the mentality of any supporter who ever goes in to a football match expecting or demanding to win.
