This does seem a bit unusual... it's not even as if the game has been substantially expanded in any way. The U version is circa 19 Gb and, apparently, the Switch version has under 8 Gb on the cart with this further 13 Gb download.

I wonder if it really is a case of cutting back on costs by using a smaller cart size? If this became a common theme, Nintendo might as well have not bothered with carts and gone digital only.

For reference, without an SD card the Switch has about 25GB of useable storage. That's over half gone from one game that isn't even digital.

Cancelled my Switch pre-order. I might pick it up cheap on PS4 at a later date instead.

Utter shite and exactly what I was worried about before the full reveal of Switch. It's doubly disgusting that this is for a retail game coming on one of the physical cards. With downloads, fair enough but I guarantee this won't be the last we see of this practice. Want to make effective use of your Switch, well with only 32GB of built in storage (Less once you take into account the space it reserves) you'll be lucky to get 2 full retail sized games on it. I think you might be just about able to squeeze Zelda and this onto it. SD cards are no longer an "Optional" extra. So much for the "choice" I had to get an SD card. Should have been at least 64Gb from the beginning.

32Gb in this day and age. strawberry float sake. :fp:

I was all for getting this on Switch but this has put me right off! I want to own a physical copy so I can play straight from the cart

Bad show WB, i hope this is something Nintendo can clamp down on

If they clamp down on it it would mean people have less storage capacity for games, they will then either not both making stuff, or release cut down versions of things.

With sod all storage in the console and an expensive method used for physical copies this is always going to happen and will only get worse.

The bit that I would find more worrying is the "internet required" bit on the front, does that mean always on, if so that would make out and about play a challenge.

No that means you have to download most of the game because it isn't entirely on the cart.

Yeah, it definitely feels like Nintendo should have a rule that just says "don't be a twat, put the FULL GAME on the card. Sure, you can patch it later, but you need to be able to play the thing off what you buy in the shop". With a 13GB download it'll be interesting to see if it affects the physical/digital sales ratio in any way, or if the man on the street isn't going to realise.

I've seen someone on Neogaf mention that the eShop listing for Europe states it's 8.2GB but also requires the 13GB download afterwards in order to play, so basically lying about the size requirements of the digital version.

This is one of the few titles that is slightly cheaper on Switch than on other formats. At Amazon, it's £39.99 on Switch compared to £44.99 on the PS4 and XBO. Naively, I'd thought that Nintendo must have worked with Warner to get the game out there at a cheaper price point... now it appears that "shenanigans" are at play!

Are we sure that this is the case? Surely if a 13GB download was needed with the physical release (which requires an Internet connection and a larger SD card) would be put in large on the front of the box and in the product description? There's nothing on Amazon which refers to this...

I can imagine this being a nasty surprise for a lot of people who buy the game...

It is on the box.
The front says "Internet required" and the back says "up to 13GB of storage required for game download"

PS4 and Xbone are just under £35 at Base.com.
I'm getting the PS4 version for my lad. :shifty:

The amount of space required to download additional content for the games is ridiculous and is made even more so by the limited storage space on the Switch, however it's not a new issue, or one exclusive to Switch. I seem to remember Halo MCC on Xbox One requiring a 20GB download on day one which was essentially the rest of the game, if it hadn't had this it would have needed another game disc in the box. Of course due to the large HDD in an Xbox One it doesn't mean that the customer needs to go out and buy something extra, whereas on Switch you're likely to need an SD card, whether you go retail only or not.

Given that Switch cartridges have limited storage space anyway and are more costly to buy in larger capacities I could sadly see this sort of thing becoming the norm. Although it's a pain, SD cards are relatively cheap to buy, the key thing is to advertise it on the boxes so people are aware that they will need additional storage.

I think the bigger long term issue is that in years to come, when servers are no longer switched on, people purchasing a physical copy of Lego City (and other games which do the same) will no longer be able to play it as they won't be able to download the rest of the game. That itself is a ridiculous situation.

Are there any plans to allow external drives to be attached to the dock, so you can keep everything on there and transfer games in and out of the internal storage as you need them?

Exactly - half of the games released today will be completely redundant when the servers etc. are switched off.

Yeah, even those that don't have huge amount of content that needs to be downloaded are often so reliant on patches now to add full functionality, or fix game breaking errors that they'll be unplayable too. We'll end up in a position where we can't go back and play games from this generation but we'll still be able to plug in a NES cartridge and play a game just like we could when it was released.

WB have apparently said that people who purchase it at retail do not need to download the game.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017- ... -on-switch

So that leaves a couple of options as far as I can see.

1. The entire game is on the card, but is highly compressed and requires a chunk of it to be installed to the storage space.

2. WB are talking shite and only a portion of the game is on the card, with the rest needing to be downloaded.

3. There's been a huge mistake with the printing of the labels and the game runs from the cart perfectly fine.

If it's 3 I'll still pick it up. Either of the others is just shite.

Really annoyed as I was looking forward to this.
