Judging by how much there is in all Game Worlds and the Adventure that I got with the BttF Level Pack it'll be at least 10 hours, not counting the extra content it unlocks in the Story and other bits and pieces. I'll stream some later.
I broke my rule of "No toys-to-life gooseberry fool. Ever" and just picked up the started pack in town.
Just so I'm sure, I get the Portal and BTTF stuff, right? The level packs are extra "mini-adventures", but I still get to play the stuff everyone's been raving about?

Depends what you mean by the Portal and BTTF stuff?
Those Dimensions come up in the main story campaign which of course you get access to, but they're just a level in a campaign. They don't last that long and you don't play as any of the characters and there's not much replay value.
The Game World and Mini-Adventure you have to pay to get access to I explained what you get with what on a previous page.
If you're a fan of Portal though I would absolutely recommend getting the Level Pack because the extras are brilliant. The Game World is the best one I've seen in the game so far by miles, all the voices all the characters, loads of test chambers and humour it's utterly brilliant. Almost worth the £30 price tag alone. Just played it for hours and only scratched the surface of what there is
Here's my stream of the Portal Game World, warning it will make you want to spend money.
So I've got this right you can access for example the back to the future world without buying the level pack but if you buy the level pack then you can do more stuff in the world?
I'm confused by the comments that it gives u only about one hours worth of extra gameplay in for example the BTTF world but ten hours of extra gameplay in the main game. Is that right? I'm so confused.
You have the main campaign which is 15-20 hours by my reckoning. It's a story which takes you to levels based on all of the franchises in the game these are linear environments in which you have a task to complete which once done sees you progress. It's broken up into chapters, at the climax of each is a boss fight.
Separate to the main campaign are Open World free roam areas for every single franchise in the game, we'll call these 'Game Worlds' In these worlds there are tasks to complete, things to collect, little missions, some races and lots of exploring. They're a lot of fun and are all nicely designed. You get access to a game world solely by having one character from the appropriate franchise. Gandalf opens up the LotR Game World, Batman the DC one and Wyldestyle the Lego Movie one. These Game Worlds and the campaign above are the things you get with the starter pack. To open up new Game worlds you need a figure from the franchise you want to unlock, Marty/Doc will open up BTTF, Homer/Bart will open up The Simpsons, Chell will open up Portal.
By my reckoning so far there is at least 10 hours of gameplay in each of the Game Worlds, it's tricky to judge exactly how much because there are certain tasks in both the Game Worlds and the Campaign which can only be completed by a certain character. For example there are little gadget things in all Game Worlds I've been to so far which can only be used whilst playing as Dr Who, this goes for all sorts of other characters, you need Legolas or Bart to hit bulls eyes, Gollum to sneak through small holes etc etc. Because of these you can't 100% a Game World with just the characters from that franchise, it seems like you need somewhere between 5-10 extra figures. To 100% a Game World would probably take a lot longer than 10 hours, maybe 15-20.
In addition to the Game Worlds and the Campaign certain franchises have their own mini-adventure which is basically a 2-3 hour campaign. This is what you have to buy a Level Pack for, but of course buying a level pack will also unlock the Game World for the franchise you bought it for. Currently only The Simpsons, Back to the Future and Portal have level packs, Dr Who is coming in November.
In terms of what you have to pay to get access to everything.
Fun Pack - £15 - Will open up the Game World of whichever level pack you buy, assumming you don't already have it unlocked. Team Pack - £25-30 - Will also unlock the Game Worlds but they come with an extra couple of figures to help solve some of the puzzles as per the examples above of Gollum being able to sneak through holes. Level Pack - £30 - Unlocks the mini-adventure and the Game World for the appropriate franchise.
The difference between the campaign and the Game Worlds can be viewed in the video I posted above.

Cool, I was planning on buying the Portal and BTTF packs at some stage anyway, but I would have been annoyed if *all* the stuff was locked away behind an additional purchase.
I've never played a Lego game before, so I'm really surprised at how well written it is. The gameplay is a little janky, but the whole thing is just so sweet you have to let it slide. I also haven't built anything with lego since I was like 7, so I was also surprised by how much I was enjoying constructing the portal. It's really therapeutic. I can see why so many adult geeks collect Lego now, and I'm a little worried this might prove to be a gateway drug in to that financial black hole.
So my number one thought during my time playing this yesterday was "I wish I had a son".

Edit. Also what format are people playing this on?
Me too And I've already pre-ordered the Doctor Who level pack.
Is it possible to use additional characters in place of the central trio? Like, could I run with Batman, Marty McFly, and Chell and have them interact differently in the cutscenes during the main adventure?
I really doubt it, due to the sheer amount of possible dialogue combinations, but it'd be strawberry floating amazing if so. I'm guessing from the character select wheel you just have the main trio *plus* any extras, and the most they interact is through stuff like Gandalf comparing the Batmobile to Shadowfax when he's driving it.
You can't do that sadly and if you just use another trio to go through the story when you reach a cutscene it'll just be Batman, Wyldestyle and Gandalf that show.
Just spent about 2 hours exploring the Portal Game World, it really is amazing, collecting studs so I could get the max and see if there was a reward. As I had the metre full up bar a fraction the game crashed on me AGAIN.
About the 6th time it's happened now but that was the most infuriating.
This does indeed just keep getting better. The colour matching mechanic is just sublime, hoping to see some non-primary colour puzzles come in to play later. The actual toy pad is getting some serious use, which is great.
I'm up to Doctor Who, and I'm even enjoying the franchises I don't care about. The Simpsons was trash, though. Minimum strawberry floating effort from their studio there. Audio clips of old lines, from Homer only.

Thanks this is the best explanation of how it all works I think I've found on the Internet.
Yeah for some reason finding out what everything does is a right ball ache unless you can play around with it.
Streaming some now, going to be doing some Campaign stuff followed by the Portal mini-adventure and then dick about in one of the Game Worlds. Stream link in my sig.
