Hi guys,

My laptop monitor (Lenovo Y510P Windows 10 64-bit) has suddenly started flickering and flashing intermittently for the past couple of days, and I don't know how to fix it. I've updated my graphics card driver but doesn't seem to have made a difference.

Whilst the effect reminds me of the TV interference on Independence Day, the nostalgia wears off pretty quickly and is stopping me from playing XCOM, which is very bad.

Any ideas?

Looks like your screen is dying as it looks like the backlights are flickering on and off.

Could be the screen's cable inside the laptop has come loose, do you move the laptop about often?

Thing is at the moment it's fine, but maybe in another half an hour it'll do that flickering again for a minute or two, and then go back to normal for a day.

Hmm -- I watched the videos again just to be sure and I'd be really surprised if it were a software problem. If it's in warranty I'd get Lenovo to take a look; but if not, if you're handy with a screwdriver it might be worth Googling a teardown guide for that laptop, opening it up, and checking no cables are loose?

Looking at the close up of the graphical glitches in the taskbar I wonder if there's a chance of the onboard GPU being a bit fried? I've seen faulty GPUs before producing weird artifacting like that, without it being the screen itself.

To rule out the GPU being faulty, plug in an external monitor into the display port (assuming this model has one). If it produces no glitches at all you know it's the laptop screen/internal screen cable.

Can't remember how long the initial warranty was :fp:

I got it in April 2014, so assuming it's a 2-year warranty them I might be in luck. I'll check that out.

So if I plug my laptop into my TV via HDMI, you mean?

Yeah, plug it into your TV, if it doesn't glitch out then you know it's the screen, if it still glitches out then it must be the GPU.

Ok I'll try that. It's not flickering at all at the moment but when it starts to I'll give it a test.

Thanks guys :D

edit: it's out of warranty so either way I'm going to end up paying :x

The screen isn't glass so replacing an lcd panel isn't insanely difficult. But tearing down a laptop is no easy task. I reckon Lenevos will be built more sensibly.
