 No way they feel cheap and the battery runs out real fast. They look better but they are built a lot worse!

Lips Getting New Game in Spring, DLC in December, and a Facebook App

Microsoft Game Studios dropped a trio of Lips announcements today. Lips: Party Classics, the next installment in the Xbox 360 exclusive singing-game series developed by iNiS, is set to arrive this coming spring. You won't have to wait all winter without new material, though, as new downloadable tracks are due in December. To top it all off there's also a Facebook application called 'Lips Jukebox' on the way.

According to the press release, Party Classics will include a "...wide selection of 40 peppy, festive, dramatic, and exhilarating songs," including "Love Shack" by The B-52's, "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor, "Rock And Roll All Nite" by KISS, "Wannabe" by Spice Girls, "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany, and "Y.M.C.A." by Village People.

Eclectic December game add-ons for 'Lips' are also in the pipeline, bringing downloadable tracks such as "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" by The Temptations, "Right Round" by Flo Rida, "Think" by Aretha Franklin, and "Blister In The Sun" by Violent Femmes. Holiday-themed tracks will be available as well, such as "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby, "Santa Baby" by Kylie Minogue and "Hanukkah Blessings" by Barenaked Ladies.

In other 'Lips'-related news, there's also a new free Facebook application called ' Lips Jukebox' that "puts a pair of singing lips on your photos transforming them into a mini music video starring you and your best friends and family." "Barbie Girl" by Aqua and "Love Fool" by The Cardigans are listed as sample song choices. All things considered, it's a pretty clever marketing tool - though I can't help but be reminded of the Twizzlers commercials from the mid-80's.

'Lips: Party Classics' comes out exclusively for the Xbox 360 in Spring of 2010.

Party Classics out in February+January DLC

The Lips karaoke series grows again on 26th February when Microsoft releases a new instalment called Lips: Party Classics.

Inside are 40 anthems from the land of cheese. Artists include the Spice Girls, the B-52s, the Village People, Chumbawumba, Tiffany, KISS and the immense Gloria Gaynor.

Avatars are integrated, Avatar rewards are unlockable and there's now USB microphone support so that Rock Band and Guitar Hero devices finally work.

What's more, Microsoft's got loads of new songs to throw at Lips owners in January. These cost 160 MSP each or 440 MSP when bundled as a pack.

Released earlier this month:

* "Lean On Me" - Club Nouveau
* "Baby When The Light" - David Guetta feat. Cozi
* "Homecoming" - Kanye West feat. Chris Martin
* Miracles Song Pack - "I Second That Emotion", "Love Machine (Part 1)", "The Tracks Of My Tears"

Available from 15th January

* "Ring My Bell" - Anita Ward
* "Soul Meets Body" - Death Cab For Cutie
* "Mustang Sally" - Wilson Pickett

Available from 22nd January

* "Little Lies" - Fleetwood Mac
* "Tripping" - Robbie Williams
* "Ordinary Day" - Vanessa Carlton

Available from 29th January

* "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" - Crystal Waters
* The Cardigans Song Pack - "Carnival", "Erase/Rewind", "My Favourite Game"

New Lips: I (Heart) the 80s

The US videogames rating body, the ESRB, has given a T for teen rating to Lips: I (Heart) the 80s, the latest addition to Microsoft's karaoke game.

According the the ratings group the teen rating is due to "lyrics, mild violence, sexual themes, and use of alcohol and tobacco."

While I hate listening to 80s music I have to admit that they're some of the best songs to sing along to - if only for the cheesiness

Could it be that MS/iNiS are finally picking up the pace? Still I’d prefer it if they release all these tracks as DLC or let us export them to the hard drive (Rock Band style), especially if there is no update to the interface. The disc-swapping for a game like this is a real pain.

With regards to camera support – I’ve got a feeling that Lips could benefit from Natal support. Not just as a camera, but also game play and control features.

But I think it’s the DLC that disappoints me the most. Yes, they have weekly releases; but only 2 to 3 tracks at a time? Compared to what Singstar is offering it’s very disappointing. Plus most of the songs are also available on Singstar (and cheaper, I think?)

I was expecting so much more from iNiS. It’s a real shame as I really prefer the look of Lips (the new one that is, with the avatar support etc.) and love the mics. It be more willing to support this game if I knew they were listening to people’s issues and good things were to come, but alas it doesn’t seem to be the case.
