PostLondon 2012 - worth it?
by Lotus » Fri Jul 26, 2013 9:26 am

The Anniversary Games kick-off tonight - a year to the day since the opening ceremony of the Olympics in London 2012.

One question really - was it worth it?

It's too soon to see whether the promises about 'legacy' have come to fruition, but are we heading along that path? Have you been inspired to take up sport as a result of the Olympics?

Or was it a waste of money with no real long-lasting impact? The games came in £6.5 billion over budget - a price worth paying?

Lots of debate on the radio this morning, keen to see GRcade's opinion. 8-)

Yes because it was a brilliant time and a great spectacle and it the first time in a long time that everyone genuinely felt happy with everything. Can't put a price on that. Look how strawberry floating miserable we are now.

Yeah, they were great. No idea if the utilisation of the stadia is better or worse than usual (they claim better), but lots of effort into legacy would be a good thing for the country.

I was pretty sporty beforehand so I haven't noticed nay difference. I would hope it inspired a reasonable number to do sports, because it's a great past time (better than sitting in front of screens playing computer gam... oh, yeah, gooseberry fool).

It was a lot better than I thought it would be  Although the shameless gauging and gooseberry fool ticket system were a disaster.

Not sure what the point in this anniversary thing is.

Poll added.

And I'd be interested to know if outside London, there's been any visible improvements in facilities, or new facilities opening, etc. Any initiatives to encourage uptake of sports. Can't say I've seen much round here.

Plymouth had a massive new sports centre open, which may have had some push from the Olympics (early planning would have been back in 2005 when we won it). Hard to say as I don't have children, which is where the majority of effort is put regarding legacy/new equipment... which makes sense because an unfit adult needs to want to do sport, whereas you can trick children into taking part.

Meh, bottom line is we've done strawberry float loads better than Athens, on par with Sydney and was a refreshing, non-scary Olympics after Beijing.

Do you ever get tired of being wrong?

I have never really enjoyed the Olympics, but supported London 2012 as we should be a nation that looks to put on large events like this. As it turned out, I ended up really enjoying the coverage. £9billion sounds a lot (and it is!) but we have broken even on costs so far and are expected to make a profit eventually. Even if we made no money at all, £9billion is strawberry float all to the country as a whole when you look at what we spend on other things.

Oh and Laga, the Games were not just in London, I went to see Olympic football in Cardiff for instance.

The main Olympic stadium has turned out to be a bit of a lemon but apart from that have any of the other facilities been considered failures?

It was outstanding. I loved every second of it. 5Live was playing some of the best commentary moments this morning, and I found myself tearing up.

Totally worth it.

They were certainly focused in London though. Even down to the name "London Olympics" rather than "British Olympics"

For me the Olympics were a bit like signing a footballer. No footballer is worth tens of millions of pounds but when the player does his job and you win stuff you're glad you signed him. So yeah, I thought the Olympics were mostly worth it.

You what?????

Every Olympics is named after the location it's staged in. As in London or Athens or whatever. They're the host cities. They've never called it British Olympics, German Olympics or Greece Olympics.....Etc

Werent most of them designed to be temporary so there wouldnt be a bunch of derelict sports venues dotted around London? And theyre gonna get some use out of the Olympic stadium for the Rugby World Cup though so thats something.

Oh and to answer the original question. Yes.

During the run up to it, I was in the 'I don't give a toss about it' camp, but once it got underway, my God I was hooked, I loved it, I tried to watch as much as I could of it. Super Saturday will always stick in my mind. Watching Jess or Mo get gold, down to the rower reading her lips saying 'Oh my God we've won the Olympics!' it was an awesome event. And it was true that it brought this country together as one, albeit briefly, but the feel good factor it brought.

As regards to legacy, I'm not too sure? We're in the Playstation nation (or culture I should say) too many kids are still sitting on their arses transfixed to CoD.
