There seems to be more athletics on the telly these days. Which is a terrible thing.

I had the joy of going, twice. It was great, and created fantastic memories that will stay with me forever - one of which was walking past Buckingham Palace at around 2am in the morning. Never in my life seen London so quiet.

Created a probably once-in-a-lifetime atmosphere too. Really can't emphasise how different a feeling around London it was. It was like someone had created a film set, almost Disneyfied, version of London. Was very special.

Athletics is a lot more interesting to watch and the people who do it are a lot more deserving of attention than footballers I'd say.

No doubt the same miserable banana splits who moan every time something uses taxes. I well imagine the same people would have moaned when the NHS was first set up, had they been around then.

The ones that voted no probably don't like sport and were upset that their favourites television programmes weren't on.

I did watch the opening ceremony - more out of morbid fascination than anything, although I was curious to see what the money stolen off me was actually used for. As I feared, it was frittered away on political posturing (the NHS bit - almost completely meaningless to two thirds of the viewing audience around the world) and, if I recall correctly, George Michael in an ill-fitting leather jacket doing some 'dad dancing' to the considerable embarrassment of all concerned.

Cal, in a ceremony that traditionally celebrates the host country, why would the UK not celebrate the NHS?

The worst thing about the Olympics for me was the dawning realisation that I don't actually live in Danny Boyle's Britain, I live in Cal's Britain.

It's a reasonable question. It just wasn't something I had expected to see at the opening of the world's biggest international sporting event. I dunno, it just felt crowbarred into the proceedings for no other reason than Mr Boyle felt he wished to make some point or other.

The point is (as with every opening ceremony) is celebrating what is great about the host country. The NHS, for all its flaws, is still a strawberry floating fantastic thing, and is definitely worth celebrating.

I am both of these things, if you ask me for a selfish opinion all the olympics did for me was cause headaches at work as they had a quarantined area that our engineers weren't allowed working in for 6 weeks. Wasn't a small area either was a good chunk of London.
