I love London, grew up there till i was 15 and i go back a lot to see friends and just generally visit areas, different places i haven't been to (i only visited the Tower of London early this year) and of course to watch Tottenham. Even since the mid to early nineties though London has changed a hell of a lot and especially where i grew up in Muswell Hill. I wouldn't move back though even though i'm a city person, it's really expensive and i have a more chilled out city life in Norwich now which i like a lot.

I like living in cities but London's too much for me. Too busy and too expensive. Prefer a higher standard of living.

But if everyone complains about London someone might eventually realise there's more the country than just one city so it might make sense to invest elsewhere. You've even just said yourself that public transport in Liverpool is crap compared to London. If companies decided to set up shop outside of the capital maybe other cities would also get the investment that London has had. There's literally no reason companies need to be based there other than to say "we've got a head office in London, the #1 best perceived city in the world"

Like Curls said it's absolutely insane that London is basically the entire focal point of the UK.

Yeah but who wants to live up north :dread:

I get what you mean though, some cities are getting more attention though due to the high costs of London. Birmingham and Manchester are already getting more investment and house prices and general perception of other areas have improved.

London is an utter toliet and the streets are like the WIld West where everyone carries a knife and no-one speaks English.

I can't afford to live in London because I'm not an immigrant(free housing/ money)

I live in London, it is fast becoming a toilet. Stop peddling lies!

It's full of begging immigrants, as is the rest of the country actually. The demise of the U.K. I want my country back.

I love that complete misconception that immigrants have a free pass to benefits and housing. Economic Migrants get things like JSA on a short term basis usually over here. I can't imagine it being different on the mainland. Other benefits apart from that are hard to get because they more than likely don't fit the criteria for it.

Do they not know any history. In the wild west they had guns and nearly all spoke english. 6/10, must try harder.

Surprised Paris is second. I've honestly never heard many good things said about it from friends who've been. The older crowd love it but what I've heard doesn't appeal. Never been and have no plans to either.

I love London. Lived there for 2 years and whilst it's obviously expensive there is just so much to do. The transport pisses al over any other I've used also. Compared to Rome where I live now its like a futuristic city.

A lot of banana splits there but the same can be said about any city where people like bankers are.

Food is far superior to most cities, great parks, amazing history and free museums! It's probably still my favourite city despite its obvious problems.

I was pleasantly surprised by Paris. You hear the horror stories of rude frenchmen, but I loved it. Stunning city, amazing museums and other touristy sights. Great food, great shops. The people were very friendly, certainly far more than I expected.
Even took a day trip out to Normandy. Saw the WWII beaches, fortifications and the museum at Caen, then visited the American Cemetery. Humbling stuff.

Melbourne has won the "Most Livable" city in the world 6 times in a row.
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-n ... r-in-a-row

Having lived in both, holy gooseberry fool does Melbourne beat the gooseberry fool out of London. It's like London without all the shittiness, without the rudeness, the anonymity, the feeling you're a cog in an infernal machine. It's also a viable place to settle down as, unlike London, the average Joe can actually afford to live somewhere that isn't a million miles away from the good stuff.

When I got home I had a brief look at moving back down to London. Holy moly. I gave up when some dude offered me a room just big enough to fit the single bed it came with (which was on a shelf) for £600 a month not including bills. In Walthamstow. The thing was, that was the only room I'd seen anywhere near that price.

Yeah but you have to interact with ever-so-slightly more Australians in Melbourne than in London, so it's not all sunshine and rainbows.

There aren't that many Australians in London anymore. Due to increased VISA restrictions the hay day of Wimbledon and Earls Court basically being overrun by Ozzie's is long gone.

Comparing cities is an odd one, they all have their own qualities and their own problems. Even if you've lived in several, your opinions will be dramatically affected by what was happening in your life at the time.

Comparing Melbourne with London seems particularly odd to me, I mean, Melbourne is new. It is bound to feel very different and have certain qualities that London could never have but there is a reason that European cities are still extremely popular tourist destinations, and that's because they have so much history. Both kinds of city are good and it's possible to love both!

Just on this, I'm sure you were being facetious but it obviously isn't that simple. Big and small businesses alike will go where the money is, they don't ignore the rest of the country just because they have no imagination. It's capitalism at work! I'm no expert but when the UK's industries were systematically shut down in the 80s, we became a tertiary economy and London was the obvious hub. It has happened naturally as a result of the economic policies of successive governments, not because people have forgotten that the rest of the country exists.

To me that sounds like London is the big thing because the goverments have forgotten or just don't care about the rest of the country, then :shifty:

There are large cities all over the country. Basing everything around one spot is a recipe for disaster. I'm still baffled someone's decided to build another theme park inside the M25 :fp: It's just total idiocy.
