Okay so I have posted in the "Does anyone here do YouTube" thread but I would really like to get a little bit more in the way of feedback for my Let's Play series on YouTube.

I hope people don't see this as blatant advertising or spamming or whatever, because I truly would like some honest (harsh even..?) and constructive criticism of my YouTube. I'm not looking to get views of subs out of this, just views from people about what they are looking for in a great LP channel.

Specifically in the way of my commentary and what I talk about because personally I do feel like I am lacking... but I am really bad for being my own critic and not very good at critiquing on others as well so I figure you guys could help.

I have been on YouTube about a month now and completed a number of LP's, some on my own, some with my sister for multiplayer ones and Ben Jordan. I feel like I get nervous as soon as I start recording and feel like I get a bit of stage fright, sometimes I like to have a drink before I start recording because it loosens me up a little bit but I don't want to get to the point where I am wasted for every recording lol. Quite often I have trouble finding things to talk about, or being entertaining when I do it. I have quite a monotone voice and I know people say it's good to sound enthusiastic for your LP's because no one wants to hear someone being bored but it's kind of just how I sound. Guess I have to change that!

I realise the microphone quality of my older videos and multiplayer videos is lacking... we are investing in a new high quality microphone so hopefully that should improve because currently we have this really crap one where we have to lean right into the mic for it to pick us up - and we often forget about it and start to get very quiet.

Anyway, any critique or feedback you guys have is greatly appreciated. It can be as harsh or nice as you want it to be (but add something reassuring too ) and I look forward to hearing what people have to say (:

If the rest of YouTube is anything to go by you should be making a living from it in no time.

Not my cup of tea - too much retro stuff - but I wish you well. If it's any consolation my own gaming channel has now had over 128,000 views - with no effort at all on my part (apart from posting the odd video round here and in the occasional Steam forum now and again). Not bad, for someone who couldn't really care less! I'm too scared to do game commentaries - despite having a brand new Blue Yeti mic and a lovely Rode boom arm/cradle thingumybob to hold it in. I'm probably the world's most inept YTuber.

Only retro stuff at the moment as I have a really old PC that can't record and play newer games unfortuntely.

And yeah, since I only mainly play Nintendo and DOS games that's all thats really gunna be on my channel... For now, when I get a new computer I'll be recording more modern games.

I think the only video I am making stuipid voices in is the Mario Kart 64 one, we imitate Toad for a few seconds but that's about it really...

Eh it's not about making a living it's about playing games I used to play back in the day and also obscure games like Famicom Detective Club/ Sweet Home/ and other fan-translated ones that didn't make it over here.

There are so many people doing the comedy, straight gameplay and achievement routes that you're probably best off going with your idea of doing games that people won't have seen. Also any games that you are above average at. Everyone is busy failing for laughs that videos of people showing skill at games other than COD or Fifa are scarce in comparison. Basically if you can't make it funny then make it interesting.

Obviously if you were to go serious you would need to improve the visual and audio quality. Plus a facecam as people like to see who they are watching play.

Personal opinion but I always prefer some colour commentary on videos like this. A guy talking to a friend is better than a guy talking to himself.

Yeah i'm looking to have multiple people on all of my playthroughs come time (:

Mario Kart 64, Super Circuit and all the Ben Jordan games have me and another person talking on it.

In terms of video quality, 720p is really the highest I can go till I get a new powerful PC. In terms of audio quality, I got a new headset which you can listen to the quality of in my newer Pokemon Crystal Nuzlocke episodes. As for recordings with more than 1 person, we are looking to get a better headset since all we got is a £6 mic from Currys which is crap lol.

Yeah, I have a lot of new content planned coming.

I don't think you can really get away with a let's play channel (these days anyway) unless you also do content to get people invested in your personality first.

Why would I watch your videos? You're just some random guy playing Mario Kart and Pokemon.

Make some actual content videos showing off your personality to try and encourage viewers to subscribe.

Then once people like you they will pretty much watch anything you make.

See Maximilian DOOD for an example. He started off by making tutorials, 'speech' videos and other stuff.

Same goes for EgoRaptor or Jim Sterling

They made content first, then when they had enough followers they started doing let's play content.

Oh wow Sonic Chaos, completely forgot about that game!

Watched some of the Mario Kart one, awkwardly asking the girl if she's ever had syphilis and then constantly trying to tell her how to play. Had to turn it off when the 12 year olds started doing voice impressions during Moo Moo Farm, mega cringe. The Sonic Triple Trouble one was more interesting, only issue with that was audio but that's something you're aware of.

Maybe keep down the childish banter in the videos.

Aha, thats my sister... we pretty much live off of ripping it out of one another. We're both a lot worse when we're not on cam.

I was telling her how to play because of all 5 episodes of our Mario Kart Super Circuit playthrough she didn't know you had to hold down the shoulder button to drift despite her saying she "knew how to drift"... so I figured her lack of skill would carry over.

Are you recording off-screen with a camcorder by any chance? Brightness and focus seems to be changing quite a bit throughout.

Hello. Yes I am recording off-screen with a Camcorder. I am in the process of getting the El Gato Game Capture Device to make the Quality in HD. I guess besides the Actual video Game Quality, what do you think? In terms of Commentary and Actual Entertaining GamePlay?
