So I just watched a review and it looked like this was a full on 100% open world combat game. Is that a fair description? It looks great but can't really work out what to expect. I've never played a Batman game.

It's more like Assasins Creed really, you do get to fight a lot of enemies but it'll tell you all the button prompts. It's a good game, if you fancy running about mordor killing orcs and sneaking about its perfect.

Yeah a lot of the game feels like they have set an AC game in Middle Earth. You even have to go and climb buildings for viewpoints.

Much better than any Ass Creed title though.

After 27 hours of grinding in the first map I started the mission to move to the other map (the better looking area) collected 100% of the glyphs and 100% of the relics. No trophy pop up notification for the relics then read the description saying you need to not only collect them but listen to every embedded message :fp: :slol:

So now I just have to sit there and listen to each message again because I skipped a few by exiting the relic screen..

Wasn't so bad, seems I exited about 3 of the artifacts without finding the hidden message spot so once they were found it unlocked the trophy. Just got the brand ability, oh my that's going to make fights more fun!

I borrowed the PS4 version from my brother tonight as I was too tight to buy it. I'm really disappointed. It looks quite dated, the human character models have that same last gen problem where the eyes look sunken and weird. Not massively impressed how you can, within minutes of starting, end up fighting 30+ orcs and two captains in what seems to be a virtually endless battle.

I wouldn't mind all that if the environment looked interesting but they literally found the most boring landscape within middle earth to start the game. Like hell am I putting hours into this just to get to a more interesting looking area!

Near 40 hours in with about 3-4 missions left to do, finished all side quests (all glyphs, artefacts, survival, hunting and slave missions done along with sword, dagger and bow legends done too) loved every minute of it. Just trying to polish off the remaining trophies before cracking on with the story missions.

I once read SoM described as an average game with an excellent mechanic bolted on the back. Pretty much sums up my experience. The combat is good and the Nemesis system is astounding but everything else is just meh. The world is extremely active and feels like a real place but it's so aesthetically dull it makes The Library look interesting. The story is fine, but nothing is compelling me to see it through. The mission variety is almost nonexistent.

Still, strawberry floating love it.

I bought it the other day and have started playing through it. Same thoughts really, the core gameplay mechanic is fantastic. Love sneaking about and then getting into massive melees, but the map and exploration elements are pretty poor. The main map does look nice when the sky is blue, but unfortunately most of the time it is brown and red.

White rider trophy get! Next is helping a captain survive a recruitment and kill off his followers and then him. Haven't really bothered with killing off other players nemesis so only done about 2 of those.

I never could get into this game. Interest just kinda fizzled out for me and I've not been back to it since I first got it. I did really like the game's look (basing it all on Peter Jackson's version of LotR - those Orc designs are spot-on), but gameplay I just found boring. Perhaps I'll come round to it again and give it another go in due course.

Only 2 more trophies to get. The last story mission trophy and the level 25 rune trophy, which will be a pain in the arse cause all the current warchiefs are either very low in power or they have death threats issued on them.

I kind of agree about the map, but the second half is a lot more lush for what it's worth. I loved the game, and it only gets better as you unlock more abilities. It's not really about exploration though if that's what you're after.

Figured I'd give this another go after not playing it for months....8GB update required, 8GB!

Back on the shelf that goes then...

I have returned to the game recently (PS4). I still find it quite punishing in places, but I'm trying to adopt a far more methodical approach instead of just wandering about randomly stealth-killing Orcs. Trouble is, I find fighting the Captains impossibly difficulty and this really puts me off. Being continually tw*tted and then being forced to watch as your opponent crows and gets promotion is pretty negative. I'll keep dipping in and out, but again I'm finding motivation in the game to be a real issue. :| I wish the game had taken a far more linear, story-based approach. I'm just not diggin its semi-open world thing. Love the character designs, though.

I let the update install and gave it another go last night, took me ages to get back into a rhythm again. Died a lot of times

I enjoyed it immensely when I first got the game and put in a lot of time on it, but returning to it quite a while later I've found it frustrating and I'll probably trade it in now.

I'd love to see the nemesis system again though, it's a great feature.

After getting the platinum for the game I wouldn't say there was any part that was punishing. I'd had around 20 hours worth of gameplay on the PC version before smashing it on PS4.
