lost AirPods case but can see it on find my iPhone should get it?

So I lost them on Thursday around 7:20pm. Since then they have been coming up as last detected at this location on and off. Even around 7pm today it said it was at this location. I don't understand what triggers it to refresh every now and again to say last detected at so and so...maybe everytime it connects to a nearby bluetooth signal I guess. The icon of the case on Find My appears exactly inside the building on the maps.

This evening around 8pm I drove to the house with a mate. The house was made up of four flats and posted a letter explaining that I lost the case and that its been tracked to this address and asked if they could either call/message me to arrange collection OR if they could hand it in to lost property at the DLR Lewisham station.

Around 9:41pm the location changed for the first time since Thursday evening to a location on the same road. Apparently it was sitting under a tree now about 2 houses further down.

So I drove back with my mate in the dark around 10:30pm. Even whilst I was stood there at one point it refreshed and said it was right next to me but would not connect to locate or play a sound. I hung around for 20minutes with the camera light on my phone searching but found nothing. Basically Im sure the letter spooked them and they just went out and threw it across the road onto the street somewhere...

I may go back tomorrow morning and see if I can find it in day light. But very very odd that my phone would not connect to it via bluetooth to play a sound...it just kept saying searching...yet for a fraction of a second it said it was next to me when I was stood on that street.

Yup, they were spooked and dumped it. I bet it's been chucked down a drain, in a bin or similar! Good luck though!

You must have bought a noise cancelling case.

I think it's time to cut your losses and buy a new case. Might need to forgo a French haircut for now.

Sometimes it's cheaper to go to France for a haircut, and sometimes it's better to forgo a beating at the expense of a new airpods case

Look, the case doesn’t have GPS on it. Every time you see a location for it you’re actually just seeing the location of whatever phone could last detect it within about 10m. The case may never have been in the building at all, just someone with an iPhone lives close enough to where it was dropped/thrown away by whoever found it that their phone could detect it from inside. When it jumps under the tree it’s most likely someone walked past it, and then when it was beside you all that meant was that it was you or your mate’s phone that was picking it up. It’s probably sitting in a wheelie bin

Thanks for the explanation jiggles. I was really confused but that makes sense now as the location jumped back to being in that house again but then on the road a few minutes later. Atleast I know it's somewhere on that street. Sounds like apple didn't do a good job with making a case that could be found then.
Was really frustrating that I was so close yet it didn't connect to play a sound :/ but it's telling me it is there somewhere.

I actually went back yesterday morning when I was driving back to north for the long weekend to see if I could spot it in daylight but nothing...

Will just buy a new one now then. Thanks

Sounds like a case of simply doubling your budget and buying two new cases in case one of them ends up in the bin.
