PostLove the hobby/sport/genre in other media but hate the game genre (or vice versa)?

I was just reading over the "do you have a favourite gaming genre" thread and it made me think about differences in my tastes in games compared to in other parts of life.

For example I love football - I like watching it on TV, talking about it with friends, and playing it whenever I get the chance, however I really don't like football games. FIFA, PES, Football Manager, even something like Sensi Soccer back in the day, I've tried them all and just cannot get on with them at all! I'm not sure what it is in particular, but despite loving most aspects of the sport "in real life" I just don't like playing the computer game versions.

Does anyone else have any examples of situations where your tastes vary between gaming and other walks of life?

Football is mine too, PES has the gameplay but not the online of FIFA but FIFA is shite to play.

I’m a big fan of the Alien movies and adored Alien Isolation but nothing for Aliens has come out worthy of it.

I love NFL and rugby but I have no desire to play the digital versions, I dont think rugby translates particularly well to video games and I used to play the the Madden games but they are just the same thing over and over so I dont see the point in getting new ones at all.

I wouldn't say 'hate', but I've no love for watching basketball or hockey, but do enjoy a good video game of these sports. The 2K ESPN series, for example, are superb.

Yeah I know that's the opposite way around of what the OP is asking, but I couldn't think of anything that I enjoy in the real world but hate in game form.

Haha - no that is a fair comment, I was going to stick a "or vice versa" on the thread title but thought it was hard enough to read as it is! :D

If we can do reverse examples then that's easy!

I don't like driving in real life or watching racing, but enjoy racing games.

Golf is an incredibly boring sport to both watch and play but golf games can be great fun.

Summer olympics videogames are mostly more entertaining than the actual sports.

I would suck at snowboarding or skiing (and like driving be frightened of killing myself) in real life, but I love games like SSX and Steep. This probably doesn't count quite so much as the sports are entertaining to watch.

...it's basically all "sports are better as videogames" yes.

I've thought of one! Karting. I've been Karting several times in my life and it's great fun. Karting games, whether the serious type found in PCars or the zany Karting games of Mario and the like, I cannot stand.

Hmm. This is not so much the case now, but I used to really like fishing in games (Zeldas, Animal Crossing) and probably would have been interested in games solely revolving around fishing in the past - but I have zero interest in fishing irl. I can't remember Twilight Princess fishing too well (despite doing it quite a lot), but in Ocarina of Time they did a good job of making it tense. In the Animal Crossing games getting the bob on reaction or predicting when it's coming is satisfying, and getting a shark or other rare catch was always a neat surprise.

Minesweeping. I think it must be the extra frisson that imminent death brings that Bill Gates never managed to transfer to the windows version.

If we're doing vice versa then shooting games. I've been paintballing once, was terrified throughout and then had a panic attack.

I hate watching golf, but golf games are usually pretty fun.

What type of dancing? You a bit of a mover then?

I used to be quite good at breakdance when I was younger, now I don't dance at all. Not even dad dance.
