LucasArts Planning 'Much More' Retro Remakes, Re-releasing Jedi Knight Next Week

With LucasArts' recent remake of Monkey Island having "surpassed all of our expectations," studio president Darrell Rodriguez has now confirmed that "we plan to do much more of this, both on Steam and iPhone and other platforms in the future."

The revelation came during a GameTrailers TV interview, which also saw the LucasArts president speak on reissuing the Jedi Knight games and the potential of new entries in classic franchises, such as Grim Fandango and Indiana Jones.

"Jedi Knight series is coming next week as well," Rodriguez said of the old Star Wars-based PC shooter/saber-swinging franchise. Just before the Monkey Island remake hit, LucasArts began re-releasing vintage titles for use on modern systems.

As for new entries in beloved franchises like Grim Fandango or Indiana Jones, Rodriguez noted that the company has "absolutely" thought of such things.

"One of the great opportunities working here is to be able to meet some of the legends--to meet Tim Schafer [Full Throttle, Grim Fandango], to meet Larry Holland [X-Wing, TIE Fighter], to meet [Dave] Grossman [Day of the Tentacle] or Ron Gilbert [Sam & Max, Monkey Island]," he added. "Wouldn't it be great to work with them on new things?"

How out of touch are they not to realise that people have been clamouring for this stuff for years? They've only just realised now? Jesus... :fp:

They're not that out of touch - they've been trying for years to get some of this stuff out of the door. (see: Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels).

As for classic game reissues, they've actually been on shelves for some time. (Various Star Wars and Lucasarts adventures have been available cheaply in my local Morrissons, for example, both with "support" for XP/Vista - as well as via Lucasarts website, IIRC)

So it's not a complete about-face. What's new is that these projects are actually getting through the bureaucracy layer - the Monkey Island anniversary next year seems to have been responsible for the push that got Special Edition and "Tales of" started - and they're coming to digital distribution systems like Steam, which is where PC retail really is at these days.

Give me a graphically updated version of X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter, and a graphically updated and FIXED version of X-Wing Alliance and I will gladly drop trou and lay a cleaveland steamer on your chest.

As long as it comes to Steam I will be happy. I'd rather never play a point and click adventure again than play it with a pad.

Wasn't Grim Fandango mainly controlled with the WASD keys?

Its been a while since I played so I'm probably wrong.

Yep, no pointy clicky.

I played it all with a pad, which was definitely the easiest way to play IMO.

It's perfect for XBLA.

Actually, the GrimE engine seemed to be designed with pad controls in mind - obviously Lucasasrts was looking into making console ports in the future, and while Grim never made the leap itself, it was later used to create Escape from Monkey Island which was released on PS2. (Arguably the redesigned interface was a contributing factor in why the game was less successful than previous titles, actually)

Also, I don't think it actually needs much in the way of a makeover. I'm not sure what the maximum resolution supported by the game is, but I'll be very surprised if it's much less than 720p.

Sam & Max HD please!

There's no need to be here any longer than necessary. Let's split up, look for survivors, and get out of here.

I have a gaming blog too. Read it if you wish; if you don't I won't take it too personally. Metro 2033 is shite!
