What's with the clouds moving at LIGHT SPEED? Looks ridiculous when it's cloudy and the sun comes out.

RPS have published some initial impressions, and they're not great.

I'm surprised nobody has had a pop at the collectible Playboy magazines yet, such is the times we live.

It was nice playing this before any reviews hit, then seeing them confirm my opinion: this is flash as strawberry float but boring as hell. The gunplay is dull and impactless, the core missions cycle contains essentially two different types of activity (scare the boss out by shooting people, shoot the boss and some people) and it doesn't look or control particularly well at all.

Disappointing.

You're practically given one when you go to Sammy's for the first time and Lincoln says he's going to sleep in the basement

So I drive half-way across the map to do a side mission for the Haitians which involves stealing a boat. When I get to the icon, I discover the game has neglected to load the boat.

This has happened twice now.

It's the same with the lorries

From what I can tell we need to get more rackets (neighbourhoods) for the vehicles to spawn.
Because they were locked out as I'd "maxed racket earn" for the Haitians and Photek but then they both became avaliable again after finishing up Vito's intro racket without me actually getting any more rackets for the Haitians specifically (so their maximum earn should still be the same, and thus already maxed).

So I'm guessing that once I give the Haitians a new racket it'll work again, I'm testing that now

Disappointing.

My biggest problem is that it's really easy and not in ways where scaling up the difficulty will have an impact. It's always going to be possible to sneak around and stab people with ease and it's always going to be possible to break the enemy up into little groups.

So this is a bit rubbish? Watched the quick look over the weekend and the setting, characters and soundtrack all look great.

Meh, I'm enjoying it so far. I had no interest in the previous two Mafia games so I can't compare it against them.

How very Driv3r! In fact I remember a particular mission that involved houses on stilts out in the sea where this exact scenario happened.

And they all are. The cutscenes are incredibly well done, the city is interesting and the music is great. Unfortunately, the rest of it is just...dull. The minute to minute game looks nowhere near as good as the pre-release footage, there are essentially 2 types of missions and the gunplay is really insubstantial. The city itself is also incredibly sparsely populated, with a maximum of maybe 6 or 7 cars at any one time, and maybe a handful of civilians wandering aimlessly.

I love the story so far, as well as the characters which feel genuinely rounded, but there's just not enough to keep me playing.

I know it's a sad old comparison, but if you compare this to GTA V, a game which is 3 years old, this looks and feels amateur

Doesn't come as surprise that Mafia 3 is a glitch filled gooseberry fool fest, but watching a few YouTube videos... :dread:

It looks like it's just yet another 6/10 generic sandbox game. Each one that comes out just further highlights just how good the GTA games are.

Mafia II was hardly a GTA challenger (its Metacritic/Gameranking score is 7/10), but it had enough about it (mostly the characters and story) to be fondly remembered. If we get more of the same with MIII then I will be more than happy.

Been playing this a little in between Fifa. Not really living this so far, and I loved the first and second.

The story is a typical mafia revenge tale, it's interesting enough to make me want to play through it, it's just a shame everything else is so dull from the missions where you can literally stealth through, by whistling and stabbing everyone. There doesn't seem to be a lot of variety yet in the missions.

It actually reminds me of the Godfather games, whilst not great, they were entertaining enough to play through.

What the heck is wrong with the lighting? I'd be driving and it would suddenly go dark but the sun's out the the lights stream back

For me Mafia needed a few more months of tightening up and qa testing.
