No physical magazines since early 2014. I subscribed to the iPad versions of Edge & GamesTM for a year, but when my subscriptions ran out in January of this year I didn't bother renewing them.

I had been buying video game mags since the mid 1980's but they have no real purpose in 2015. Magazines days are numbered.

For those that still read magazines and don't mind digital, the Readly app is really good, £9.99 per month for a shed load of mags, this week they added the Future publishing titles, including Edge, OXM, OPM, T3, PC Gamer, PC Format etc. Worth a look.

I'd never heard of this... it seems to be a bargain. Around one thousand mags each month for a tenner? And you can access back-issues? Wow! When I eventually get a tablet device, I'll definitely take a look at this.

I love mags but the decreasing pages and increasing prices do put me off.

I've only just spotted that the last issue of OPM (August) was £6.99. *SEVEN* quid?!? Luckily, as a subscriber I didn't actually pay that.

I love gaming mags... I've extolled the virtues of OPM many times and I still think it is a good read... and I want Future to survive... but seven quid? Really? It sounds like a death sentence approach to product pricing.

Panic averted - the new issue has arrived and it's the usual £5.99. I think the last issue was priced higher due to it including an E3 photo booklet.

Terrific sruff, ths time... a big article on Horizon Zero Dawn, Square Enix interviews, plenty of reviews (N++ got a 9) and a final preview of MGS V - the review will arrive next issue.

I bought Arty Excrement magazine once. It was pretty gooseberry fool.

Does anyone else read Classical Architecture Weekly? Some of the columns are really good.

Serious answer - I subscribe to Private Eye, and that's about it. I used to read PC Gamer, and may get a few issues once I start building a new computer (I put a build together with the help of the PC thread gurus, but my life is about to get flipped turned upside down so I've put it on the back burner).

I got an issue of Mad when I was in the US recently and it was quite funny. Worldwide subs are quite cheap (about $30), so I may order that as well.

I tried Unfinished Stories magazine last month but didn't get past the headline piece - it just wasn't the finished article.

I'm round the in-laws, and remembered I read the FIL's old copies of New Civil Engineer. I'm not an engineer at all, but there's usually a good article in there about a new stadium or complicated train station rebuild.

Magazines were a big part of my youth, back in the days of the Playstation before the days of downloadable games and demos it used to be one of the highlights of my month going into the newsagents and seeing the brand new Official mag out and seeing what demos were available that month, and I would then literally spend hours on those demos playing them over and over again. I still have my collection of Dreamcast demos from the official mag  I think I even have a few demos discs laying around for the Mega-CD.

But now I don't bother, shame really but times change I guess and now I can just download the demos and get the news online immediately. Although I did get Rue Morgue for a year until recently as part of a Nerd Block Horror subscription.

Little bit of Threadomancy here but I wondered if people do still buy magazines? I found them to be a great purchase during the pandemic when staring at a screen was becoming nauseating. There are still some really good reads out there too. In an average month I might buy:

Wired: Bi-monthly but probably the best magazine around in terms of articles and journalism.
Amateur Photographer: A weekly release but I only tend to get the issues that catch my eye.
Mac Format: has a proper old-school vibe in terms of reviews and doesn’t pander to a no-tech audience either. Reminds me of the sadly defunct MacUser magazine which was probably my favourite of all time.
Country Walking Monthly: I used to have a sub to Empire from my bank account with Lloyds for a couple of years but I do a lot more hiking than I do watching movies.
Derbyshire Life: it’s nice to catch up with what’s going on back in my home county over the border from Yorkshire.

Play, T3, EDGE, and Mac Format every month on subscription (in spite of MagazinesDirect being a nightmare); Private Eye sporadically if I see it in WHSmith.

T3 has gone downhill again unfortunately, some months it’s so anaemic that it comes in at under 100 pages, only about 70 of which are not recycled from the previous issue (buyers guides or adverts), and what is there often lacks depth. But as it’s purchased in one go, rather than on a rolling direct debit, I mainly renew for the free gift, which are normally excellent. The mag is now just a bonus.

Mac Format has been great in helping me get to grips with Mac, with loads of helpful advice.

I currently tend to read bits and pieces of other publications via Apple News+, such as Retro Gamer, PC Gamer, Stuff, EMPIRE, Radio Times…basically whatever I see that takes my interest.

Until recently I was a subscriber to The Week and Radio Times. For the former, I subbed to the print+digital package. The print edition was handy because I could pass it on to work colleagues and get more value out of it, and it didn’t cost much more to add the digital version.

Then, a series of events. Permanent working from home, so I was the only one reading the print edition. They put the price up by something ridiculous like 30%. And The Week got added to Readly.

Bonus 1: For less than the digital version of The Week alone, I could sub to Readly.

Bonus 2: Radio Times is in Readly, so I could cancel that sub too.

Bonus 3: For no extra cost I can now get every issue of magazines I’d occasionally buy: Retro Gamer, Edge, Bike, Guitar World, Metal Hammer, Viz, T3, Classic Rock.

Bonus 4: 5,000 other magazines I can freely browse.

Bonus 5: Authorised family sharing.

Bonus 6: £1 off each month by subbing via the Barclays app.

I’ve become a bit of a Readly advocate, but it really is absurd value.
