Marvel and Capcom characters will duke it out in a new crossover fighting game coming to consoles next year. Multiple sources tell Polygon that Marvel vs. Capcom 4 is currently in development and slated for release sometime in 2017.

Capcom will unveil Marvel vs. Capcom 4 this week alongside Sony’s PlayStation Experience event, we’ve been told, where the Capcom Cup 2016 Street Fighter 5 tournament will be held.

Fans of the series should expect Marvel vs. Capcom 4's roster of Marvel characters to draw strongly from the cinematic universe that Marvel Studios has popularized — and has full control over — during the past decade. That means fighting game fans will more likely see characters plucked from The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy films, and not from properties like the X-Men. Expect to see superheroes like Ant-Man and Groot make appearances, with characters of mutant origin — think Wolverine and Magneto — sitting out this entry.

A lack of X-Men characters in the next Marvel vs. Capcom would be a major departure for the franchise, which has roots that extend back to Capcom’s 1994 fighting game, X-Men: Children of the Atom.

Given that he's in that picture, I'd be amazed if Wolverine doesn't pop up in MvC4. I do think there'll be less of a focus on mutant characters though, beyond a smattering of top-tier efforts like Wolverine, Cyclops, Magneto. Thanks to the strawberry float up that is the Fox movie rights, the X-Men are quickly dropping down Marvel's list of priorities.

Thor's luscious, golden locks. They're so beautiful and perfect.

Can't stand these games, though. Easily my least favourite fighting franchise. Would have preferred Darkstalkers 4 but I guess Capcom need to go where the money is.

It doesn't really matter where the picture is from, my point was that Wolverine is so big a draw that he's featured in that bit of art(and just about every other bit of art for the entire series) - it'd be the height of stupidity to omit him now, especially given that I don't *think* there are any restrictions on the X-Men appearing in videogames.

Helps that they shoved Wolverine onto the Avengers roster the second that rights issues started popping up for the X-Men. :lol:

I'm sure Capcom would love to put Wolverine in there, but it's not really up to them. His inclusion would probably require a three way agreement between Capcom, Marvel and Fox, which I'd imagine would be an utter nightmare to organise.

To the best of my knowledge this isn't the case - there've been multiple Marvel games featuring Wolverine(and most of the rest of the X-Men) with no big studio involvement since Fox acquired the film rights; X-Men Legends, Lego Marvel Superheroes, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 etc. If they're focusing more on Disney Marvel movie characters then that's more likely because they'll see a knock on effect from movie marketing rather than due to a rights issue. You'll still see Wolverine though, I can almost guarantee it. I'm not sure who holds the rights to the X-Men videogame franchises(Activision?) but they've been used multiple times before.

EDIT: Having said that, I remember the Fantastic Four weren't included in the MvC series, but I'm not sure whether that's because they're unmarketable or due to some strawberry float up with videogame rights.

Fox just own the movie rights. Not video game.

They may put him and Storm in Just because they are such iconic MvC characters.

If they don't put Magneto, Storm and Wolverine in honestly I think that'll hurt the game.

Would Fantastic Four not fall under the same issue as X-Men seeing as they are also linked to Fox? If they are only using MCU characters then the line up could look like

Black Widow
Ant-Man
Spider-Man
Doctor Strange
Black Panther
Captain Marvel
Black Bolt
Medusa
Thanos

They also have the GotG, Nova, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Ghost Rider which can be added as DLC if they go the SF5 season route

Might Thanos be the boss in this one if they're doing MCU characters?

I care more about the capcom characters than the stupid Marvel ones.

I don't think the reason for excluding any non MCU characters would be because of rights issues. It would be Disney saying, yeah, we'll grant you the license for this game, but only if you push the characters we can make movies with.

It comes with 3 characters and the rest are DLC (£2.99 each).
