A Malaysian passenger plane has reportedly crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border.

Russian news agency Interfax reported that Boeing 777 crashed in Ukraine's restive eastern region, near where government forces are fighting pro-Russian insurgents.

Some 295 people were said to be on board the Boeing plane which was reportedly flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

Live updates

Plane was shot down about 50km before entering Russian airspace. Russian terrorists were blamed 3 days ago for shooting down a Ukrainian plane carrying food and water. There were 8 crew members.

This had 259, no survivors.

Surely this will have major consequences.

Repercussions of this could be enormous, but knowing Russia they'll just say "oops sorry".

Seems to have been pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists who fired, not the actual Russians

So if it was by separatists, what purpose does it serve blowing up a plane full of innocent people? All it will do is draw international condemnation and a massive loss of support for their cause. Mentalists, more like.

Also the plane was at 33,000 feet, that's along way for it and all the people in it to fall to the ground, strawberry floating travesty.

strawberry floating gooseberry fool world we live in :(

I've been there 6 times and I don't have a bad word to say about the everyday people. They're ridiculously welcoming, kind, thoughtful and brilliant people. The higher up the chain you go, the more dodgy, unpleasant and capable of horrific atrocities they become. And they feed the lower classes terrible propaganda.

I'm speaking to one of my Russian friends as we speak - their current news is reporting that it was another Malaysian Airlines accident and has not mentioned any idea of a missile. She's shocked that I've mentioned it could be intentional.

Apparently they thought it was a transport plane - they shot down a plane carrying food/water the other day, killing 8 crew members.

You'd imagine Russia would need to back away from the separatists at this point. You'd hope they would... :dread:

This is Russia's problem - they're the ones supplying this sort of equipment to the pro-Russian, anti-Ukranian forces.
