PostSquare Enix Crowd Funded Project - You decide!

Crackdown 3 could be revealed for Xbox One today.

The developer of Crackdown 2 (and co-developer of Kinect Star Wars, Nike+ Kinect and Kinect Sesame Street Season 2) Ruffian Games this morning tweeted that it “feels like a good day for announcements doesn’t it?”.

That’s not all, though. Microsoft Studios VP Phil Spencer yesterday tweeted that he was “looking forward to a games announce coming early in the morning” and Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hyrb added shortly after that he’s “got a busy morning coming up tomorrow”.

A new Crackdown for Xbox One was teased back in E3 last year although there have been no concrete details since.

Personally going to be a good day tomorrow, looking forward to a games announce coming early in the morning, fun part of the job.

Considering the amount of time they had to create the sequel they did the best they could. Wouldn't write them off just yet.

Square Enix wrote:We’re really pleased to throw open the doors to Square Enix Collective! Since we announced our plans back in October last year, we’ve been busy working on finalising the details, building the platform and finding some really cool teams to work.

And I’m now very proud to be able to welcome Ruffian Games, Kitfox Games and Tuque Games as the three participants for the pilot phase – they’ll have the exclusive run of Collective starting today and continuing for the next 28 days as we check everything’s working properly, ahead of opening up submissions wide in a couple of months.

All three of the team’s game pitches are available for you to peruse – Game of Glens, Moon Hunters and World War Machine. If you see something you think you’d like to play – and could see yourself backing through crowdfunding – then make sure to vote. Further more, the devs will be watching the comments, so it’s your chance to offer feedback and help make something awesome.

At the end of the 28-day period, if there’s enough community support, the teams could be offered the chance to be supported through crowdfunding via a partnership between Square Enix and Indiegogo – and if the team hits their target, that’s when the game will go into development.

So check out the projects now, and see what you think!

What an absolute joke. Square-Enix should be ashamed of themselves. I don't know how more ashamed they can be at this stage but asking people for money to fund projects is disgusting.

I think you're a little confused as to what this is all about. Read this:

They're still asking for the investment to come from crowdfunding though. For big developers/publishers like Square Enix it's damned low and not at all what the intention of things like Kickstarter were all about.
All SquareEnix are doing is 'offering advice and guidance' with the development, no financial input or real technical assistance.

Essentially, what seems to be happening is that SquareEnix have seen some some pretty succesful games come from Kickstarter and thought "Hm, how can we get a slice of that?"

Pretty much and the bold bit is usually where games go wrong too :fp:  their one main job is to pony up money for a project

With the cut they're taking? Hardly seems worth the effort for such a big company. They operate on hundreds of thousands to millions of sales, taking the vast majority or all of the profits. 5-15% off of indie PC game sales is a drop in the bucket for them.

'Advice and guidance' for an inexperienced developer can be incredibly helpful. There are a lot of things that can go wrong when making a game or distributing it and getting some help on that front could be very valuable.
Not that I think their intentions are purely to help out indie developers, but I am cautiously optimistic about it just based on what I've read so far. Plus, Moon Hunters sounds strawberry floating awesome.

But yeah, developers are probably better off just going with Kickstarter or Indiegogo directly.

Their other job is to reap the profits. What they've done here is found a way to get all the profits without having to actually spend any money themselves.

I really hate playing devil's advocate here, especially for SE, but what profits? And where do you get 'all the profits' from?

5% of the crowdfunded money, then 10-20% of the revenue (that extra 10% is if the developer is making a game based on one of their Eidos IPs, which is beyond fair). It's not quite as good as something like the Indie Fund (which stops taking a return on investment after it's been doubled or a set amount of time has passed) or taking the idea directly to Kickstarter/Indiegogo, but if SE were to directly fund and publish any of these games then they'd get most or all of the revenue).
