But... as a Wii U owner, it does feel a little like "uhm, I've already got this". I know that sounds grumpy and, to be honest, if I did have the money for the console and the game then I would be totally caught up in the excitement and buy it; purely so that I could play alongside you guys online.

I feel that Mario Kart 9 would have forced my hand into buying the console at launch, whereas this seems to be a fairly minor upgrade.

I couldn't agree more - there is no point in getting a switch for this unless you have other friends who will be playing online.

That is the thing that could end up drawing me in... I'd be disappointed if the Wii U Mario Kart Monday faded away :( .

The very fact they made it so I can play the best Mario Kart anywhere at any time was enough to confirm my purchase.

I'm only buying it because my Wii U is thousands of miles away. But I'm strangely excited for the release date, as I was only ever able to play MK8 for two weeks every year. It'll be nice to finally "own" it again after effectively renting and having to leave it behind again.

Saying that, I probably wouldn't be buying it if I was in the UK and next to my Wii U version. I definitely wouldn't be getting it at launch anyway.

This. 1000 times this.

The proper battle mode and extra characters just sweeten the deal. I still wish we were getting some extra tracks but never mind, there's still plenty to be going on with and I never really spent enough time with any of the DLC tracks in the Wii U version.

If there's an added 16 races I'll get it, a battle mode is not worth £40-50, extra characters? Meh, being portable? Again meh.

If they didn't have the time to come up with all-new tracks, they should have just given us some more retro ones.

It's already the best Mario Kart ever, so they should add to it, by making it the definitive collection of all modern MK tracks. The SNES ones and possibly the N64 ones would need some retooling, but most of the Wii and 3DS ones could fit the MK8 format quite well.

Still waiting for a next-gen version of Toad Factory...

gooseberry fool or not it is a port with some new bits that is being sold for a ridiculous price, it is one thing to take retro games and resell them over and over for each consoles own virtual console, it this is a bit of a oiss take really, is basically the same game!

I think "gooseberry fool port" now means "not much new content"

The portability thing is massive for me. If nintendo can sort out their account system I will happily buy all their games again.

Yeah I meant more that it is just a port with some tweaks, it will no doubt run fine, I just can't see how people with it on u can get super excited about rebuying a game they already have.

Do you think they will have bundled in the U DLC or will that be an extra again?

I thought it was confirmed to have all the Wii U DLC? Shame they didn't announce a third batch to go along with this.

I personally would happily just get incremental MK 8 for a good few years, rather than a sequel. The core game is the best MK ever.

Exactly, MK8 really was the pinnacle of the series in terms of gameplay so they can't really change much as it doesn't need changing. All they need to do is just build on this with new maps and characters, maybe even new modes.

I hope they announce at E3 that they will support MK8:D with multiple DLC packs over the next few years

Yeah, the Deluxe version includes the original game plus both sets of DLC that were released. The Switch version will run at 1080p on the TV screen (versus 720p on the U) and the new additions are battle mode and five extra characters and a "dual weapon" play style. For folk who haven't played the game before it is a tremendous package.

One aspect I am uncertain about is that a trailer I saw appeared to briefly describe a kind of "easy driving" mode i.e. so that you wouldn't fall off the edge of tracks so much. I hope that this aspect would be optional; even for my playing skills, this sounds a bit too easy :) .

It's essentially a game of the year edition. Had they called it as such I don't think anyone would be complaining nearly as much.

It's the "deluxe" version of Mario Kart 8. They're not going to add a huge amount of content. GOTY editions never do.

@Jawa they also brought back the Boo and the Feather.

I have no problem with Nintendo porting one of the best racing games of all time to the Switch.

Mario Kart 8 is incredible, and it needs to be enjoyed by as many people as possible.

What I do have a problem with, is Nintendo charging full price £50 for a game, on which they've no doubt already made a profit and recouped their investment into it.

It's not as thought this is Wind Waker or Twilight Princess, which needed complete HD overhauls....this is for all intents and purposes pretty much the same game, and should be released at around £20 or so.

Mario Kart 8 still sells at retail for 35GBP. The DLC on top of that is another 20-25GBP or so.

They'd be completely off their heads to sell a port of one of their best selling Wii U games for only 20GBP. The full cost of the current package (on Wii U) is around 60GBP I think and that's without the additional content they're adding for Deluxe (New Characters, Battle Stages, Battle Modes and returning weapons).
