Turns out in the 'Free play' mode, which is where you can setup games, you can't play more than either a single 2 game set or a tiebreak competition.

Urgh, this has lost a sale from me until there is, you know, actual content in the game.

The year of disappointing Nintendo continues.

I wish I'd seen all this a bit earlier. Mine's on the way now, and that is baffling and worrying.

It was very clear that the Wii U Mario Tennis was rushed, and I hoped there'd be a bit more effort put into this one. And it sounds like there is... but only a bit. :?

It's a damn shame as the actual tennis is bloody brilliant. Do Nintendo ever patch features into games? Knowing them I can't imagine they do more than basic bug fixing.

See Splatoon.

I really hope Nintendo support this as I thought this would be a guaranteed purchase but it’s sounds terribly barebones.

Same. It's weird how Nintendo's major games are so incredibly polished but the second tier games are so hit and miss.

I sort of half agree with this, and half disagree.

I think the second tier stuff like this is polished. I think most people are saying that core gameplay in Mario Tennis is really solid, with plenty of depth and skill.

But it's baffling design designs that stop the polished gameplay shining throughout the entire package. Or minor frustrations and restrictions that chip away at the edges.

They're definitely polished but games like Kirby, Yoshi, Mario Party, etc are 6/7 out of 10's and then you have the sports games that are mechanically very good but often lacking in content. I realise it would be very difficult to have at the standard of Zelda and Mario but it would be nice if the difference wasn't so great.

The key difference between the games you listed is who develops them. Kirby is Hal, Yoshi is Good Feel, Mario Party is ND Cube whereas the big titles like Zelda and Mario are obviously by Nintendo’s own internal teams. There’s obviously a difference in budget going on too.

Still, that’s not an excuse for some of the baffling omissions Mario Tennis Aces has mind you.

You can only be Mario for the Adventure Mode which makes sense within the context of the story.

Also depends on which Kirby and Yoshi games we are talking about here.

The lack of content is frustrating but I'm still really enjoying playing this. The actual tennis action is brilliant. I might even go as far as saying the best matches I've had on this are the most enjoyable 1v1 competitive online games I've ever experienced.

It's skillful, strategic, sometimes dramatic, tense, frantic - I really like it. I hope they support it with patches and updates like Splatoon 2.

I'm really bad at this game, and can admit that myself but holy hell the stages after snow mountain are complete worst. Trying to do challenge for one of rackets and like with Blooper, the pillar makes it much harder and not in good way. Unfortunately, couldn't use same thing I did to Blooper for that one since guy's racket would be unlimited, and I needed to do 400 rallys.

I'm gonna have to try again tomorrow, right now it's making me want to punch whoever thought its good idea to do that kind of court :fp:

Anyone played much local multiplayer? That would be my main reason for buying this but I haven't seen much about it online.

Keep quickly returning it to the centre of court with flat shots. Takes the mast out of the picture. Do charge shots every now and then to get enough energy to zone walk to the awkward stuff.

Haven't played any, only finished the pathetic SP. But I imagine it will be crazy spamming of trick shots to get power to smash rackets asap. I know the title is a joke but it's really not about tennis. It's more of a fighting game of parrying to build specials to get knockouts. Simple mode is probably where the actual game is.

So i was right, its not a tennis game! Held off purchasing as i wanted a solid single player experience. I just don’t know what my next switch game will be.

not sure how much more of this I will play after a while, just so limited in content, and I have no interest in online.

I am enjoying the Adventure mode so far but I really wouldn’t be getting this if you don’t plan to play multiplayer, either locally or online.

Best selling game in the UK last week, which is pretty impressive but then again it wasn't a very busy week.

I’ve finished the single player content in this and if anyone is interested I’d put Adventure mode at 3-5 hours depending on how good you are and single player Tournament at an hour max-there are only 3, no range of difficulty and I beat them all first time. No unlockable content either bar stages being added to free play in Adventure Mode.
