Looks great. Hope it's not too multiplayer focused as I hate playing games online. Nice in depth single player mode will definitely get my attention.

There's a severe lack of tennis games this gen, what happened to the likes of Virtua Tennis, Grand Slam and Top Spin?

Exactly, this looks ridiculous and nothing like a game of tennis. I feel nintendo have gone ott on the this one.

Did you just ignore my post?

It has a mode with none of the special stuff and just the basic moves.

It has a mode that is literally just normal tennis.

Day one then

Not sure you'll be able to play the story mode with just normal classic tennis. Looks like it might be inherent to the challenges. Its probably just an option for exhibition matches.
Pedz wrote:I remember when people complained about the GameCube game for the power shot things, this seems to have that and more and yet people are all like "oh so sexy".

Because rather then it just being one silly overpowered move it looks like each new mechanic has been considered and balanced? Everything has a potential counter and so it add a hole new strategic element to plain old tennis. And because we know it has normal tennis in it. So unless that somehow turns out to be shite it doesn't matter.

Polygon are suggesting this will be available to download from May 24th next week and will allow offline play, although it's a little unclear whether you will only be able to play it on the tournament weekend or use offline play in the week leading up to it:

Feel kinda eh about this one. Was super into tennis a few years back and for the longest time I have enjoyed Mario Tennis games - my friends and I would play Power Tennis in the gaming section of our local Debenhams after school sometimes, and then eventually I got around to playing Mario Tennis 64 and Power Tour on the GBA which I both loved.

It looks like an automatic improvement over Ultra Smash, but as for the rest of the series it doesn't look like it's exactly breaking new ground or going to be particularly exciting. The initial trailer seems to suggest there's gonna more depth to the gameplay but I'm not convinced. Since 64 it's generally been slower and more forgiving, and that seems to be the case here too. And as soon as the ball touches a racket a circle appears showing you where exactly the ball is going to land. The quirky new modes of play look just like stuff from Power Tennis.

Not saying the game won't be good though. It might end up being something I like a lot, but chances are it won't really be the game for me. If there was some sort of 'turbo mode' where everything got faster, that'd be cool. An addition like 200cc in MK8. Mario Tennis 64 sort of had that, in that you could unlock faster/stronger versions of each character.

The N64 game is my favourite one just for the way it plays but it's not perfect and is fairly dated. It's not pretty any more and is pretty bare bones when it comes to content (but still probably has more than Ultra Smash).

I think the problem is that this one is just not Tennis

Is the demo playable straight away or is in preparation for the mini tournament in June?

It seems that, according to reports over at Era, the demo is for the tournament weekend and only useable then - rather like the Splatoon tests.

I saw this today and was excited to get home and try the demo. I'm not seeing a demo on eshop. This thread lied to me.

I haven't properly played a Mario Tennis game since 64. The sole reason that this is on Switch has me enticed to try it out.
