Inspired by Dual's post in last film watched, i thought it would be handy to gather all the aforementioned films into one handy topic for future discussion and recommendations.

Theres a load of samurai films missing from the lists! Will post my recommendations later.

6. The 36th Chamber of Shaolin

If you ever wanted to see Forest Law VS Kazuya Machinima in live action movie then this is pretty close.

Gohatto (Taboo) is also a great Samurai film. Saw it on BBC4 a few years back.

And there's Sanjuro, of course.

Always wanted to watch Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo. Mifune's presence should give it something special.

Just want to speak up for the Steven Seagal film in my top 5 - his calm but brutal as strawberry float Aikido is one satisfying thing to watch in his early films.

FWIW I added the following to my LoveFilm list:

Drunken Master
Enter the Dragon
Fist of Fury
IP Man
Seven Samurai
The Way of The Dragon
Yojimbo

Enough there to get me started I'm sure :)

The IP Man Karate fight is still one of the most brutal martial arts sequences I've ever seen.

Righto, time for my samurai list, in no particular order -

(Akira Kurosawa)
Seven Samurai | Yojimbo | Sanjuro | The Hidden Fortress | Kagemusha | Ran | Throne of Blood | Rashomon

(All based on books by the same author)
The Twilight Samurai  | The Hidden Blade | Love and Honour | Sword of Desperation

Hara-Kiri (The Kobayashi one, Takashi Miike has a remake under the same name)

Samurai Rebellion | Sword of Doom | Sword of the Beast | When The Last Sword is Drawn | Chushingura / The 47 Ronin (Keanu Reeves is remaking this)

Lone Wolf and Cub (The first 2 are the best but they're all entertaining)

Lady Snowblood 1 & 2 (Inspiration for Kill Bill)

(Starring Reiko Ike )
Sex and Fury | The Female Yakuza Tale

Hanzo The Razor (mental )

(Recent works)
13 Assassins (Takashi Miike) | Zatoichi (Beat Takeshi. Haven't seen the original series yet :( ) | Sword of Desperation (same as mentioned above) | Azumi (the 2nd one isn't meant to be great)

(Lesser Works)
Shogun's Samurai | Bohachi Bushido

Yojimbo is my favourite film ever. Apparently Mifune had like a 5th dan in Iaido, which makes sense. One of my other favs is Ninja in the Dragons den, dunno if thats been mentioned. I'm still looking for a film with actual Ninjutsu :P

Love Tony Jaa, but I think I prefer his scenes in Warrior King to anything he's done in Ong Bak, and I loved everything he did in all 3 Ong Bak films!

I watched Dragons Forever yesturday, found it on youtube...

So awesome, it's like if the three stooges made a martial arts movie.

I also loved the fact they didn't even bother to explain why Jackie Chan was such an amazing martial artist in the movie, he plays a lawyer FFS they could have at least said he did it as a kid or something!

Cool, glad I was able to rec something you've not seen, there's tons on your lists that I've yet to get around to watching. When I said Gohatto was 'great' I really meant 'good'. Stands out as unique because of its homosexual protagonist, though, and the sword action scenes are really well done..

Cynthia Rothrock is actually a really good fighter. Here she is fighting Sammo Hung in Millionaire's Express

Erm, Shogun Assassin anyone?

The trailer makes it look a bit strange, but it's actually incredible, so many classic scenes.

Have you seen Wheels on Meals? It stars the same trio - Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao.

Shogun Assassin is an amalgam of the first 2 Lone Wolf and Cub films. I think its only like 15mins of the first one or something and the rest of it is the second film.

Yeah a friend told me that, said the film didn't make any sense to him because of it.

Still, great music, nicely over the top, and that scene in the bath tub with the woman and his child, so deep man

There's this amazing film called Riki-Oh, not because it's good or anything but because it's just so utterly mental. :shifty:
