They've always been a thing and Infinity Gauntlet was one of the biggest comic crossovers they've done. Infinity War doesn't adapt it directly but takes most of its inspiration from that and another crossover from not long ago simply called Infinity.
Yeah the infinity stones have been a part of marvel lore for even longer than the Thanos Copter.
How have you enjoyed the MCU Rinks? I’m interested to hear your first impressions of the universe as a whole.
Very impressed with how it all knits together, while each film also works in isolation, albeit with massive cliffhangers. I’m glad I didn’t have to wait months/years between the films to get the resolution. Must have driven you guys wild with anticipation.
I previously had virtually no experience of the stories, other than what I’d picked up from references on TV or people talking on Twitter. Hulk and Spider-Man I knew of from the TV shows of my childhood, plus the Asgard mythology in a non-Marvel context. I was aware of Captain America as a character, but knew nothing about him, and the likes of Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange were entirely new to me.
I think I’d have been quite lost if I hadn’t watched all the films in order, but they otherwise did a solid job of introducing the characters and explaining their back-stories. I think the only time that I wavered was in Captain Marvel, where I was wondering if I was supposed to already know her origins, as they appeared to make no sense at first, but it was all perfectly explained by the end.
The films have been hugely entertaining, without exception. My least favourite was probably the first Captain America, as it was (unsurprisingly) all a bit jingoistic. Similarly, I thought the military-glorifying in the Iron Man films was to their detriment, but they’re all still good films.
Best so far has been Infinity War, as it pulled all the strands together, but I’m just about to watch Endgame now.
Most jarring moment was when Led Zep’s Immigrant Song started playing over the battle in Ragnarok, but after the initial surprise it was a perfect choice. Made all the more appropriate by how Robert Plant basically looks like Odin these days. Wish they’d got him in the film.
Best moment of the series was Groot’s grin after his corridor massacre.
