It's an origin story. Expect Iron Man 1, but with magic. And amazing visual effects that you've never seen before (unless you've seen the latest trailers, I've heard they show some of the effects in the latest ones).

For those who've seen it- how much did they waste casting Mads Mikkelsen instead of saving him for Doom?

Completely wasted, he joins the ranks of forgettable Marvel villains.

Mads was good but he always is. He is very physical in Dr Strange but doesn't get much of a chance to use his charm or intelligence.

Enjoyed Doctor Strange. It was a little light on slapstick compared to some of the MCU films (although still funny), and some of the later fights were a bit hard to follow/lacking in clear direction, but I felt it moved along well generally. It's another film where you see them make some pretty batshit comic stuff work, which is a good thing. The visuals are also incredible, I regret not watching this in 3D to be honest! Yes, Mads Mikkelsen is a bit wasted here, the bad guys here are a bit reminiscent of The Dark World (so therefore a bit reminiscent of the geezer from Hellboy 2...). Stick around for both post credits scenes.

Continuity error?
Sitwell mentions Strange in Winter Soldier alongside Pym and someone else I think, but Strange doesn't get his powers in this until after Civil War (evidenced by the conversation before the car crash). My friend says it's because he would still have been prominent before his injury, and it's not like Marvel to make a mistake like that, but it doesn't make sense to me...

Spoilers

He can time travel so that explains it as he could have gone back and done something we haven't seen yet and that explains how shield know of him.

Pretty sure the Winter Soldier ship takes out threats before they can become threats. So there is no continuity error there.

Yeah it looks for people who fit the profile of people who would fight/be difficult for Hydra - powered or otherwise.

Possibly, but that's not in this film, so until it happens in a film I think it's a slightly jarring plot hole.

Granted, but in an interrogation, of all the people in the entire world, Sitwell mentions him as a prominent target? That's the equivalent of Islamic State declaring a fatwa on Robert Winston ahead of Barack Obama. I suppose he would potentially be near the top of the list anyway, but not a headliner, because that would imply Zola's algorithm could definitively predict singular events in the future.

I found an error like this in Bridget Jones' Baby as well, so maybe I just take this gooseberry fool too seriously :slol:

He played yet another standard Marvel villain who has the same powers as the good guys but is an evil version. Total waste of an incredible actor. (Character's fate spoiler) At least he didn't technically die at the end, so he could come back. Doubt it, though.) He did ok with what he was given I guess and his first scene with Cumberbatch was very amusing. Why can't Marvel do interesting bad guys? It's the worst part of every MCU film that doesn't involve Loki.

I presume there's no Dr. Strange thread? I saw it last night and though it was pretty good. A solid 7/10. The first 30 minutes were the weakest. Origin stories just suck. It was also the shortest Marvel movie I've seen in a long time, clocking in at around 1h40m or thereabouts I'd say. The mid-credits scenemade me even more excited to see Thor Ragnarok. I hope Strange plays a big role in it and it isn't just a cameo.

Cumberbatch's accent was super weird, though. Why not just let him be English and set the movie at the London Sanctun? Him being from New York had no influence on the story at all, most of the movie was set in Hong Kong anyway.

They won't waste Mads Mikkelsen as a one time bad guy. Surely. He'll come back as Dormammu's emissary on Earth or some gooseberry fool in Dr Strange 2.

Enjoyed it, another fun Marvel effort with enough invention to make it stand out. Like Ant-Man that invention was in the visual design and its action set pieces - it was a stunning film at times. It got a little muddled in the middle when the mystic and real worlds collided and Strange was with Palmer again, but I thought the final act was one of the best Marvel has produced yet. The best part? It's the only Marvel film I can think of where the hero triumps through outsmarting the villain, rather than beating the gooseberry fool out of them.

McAdams, Ejiofor and Mikkelsen were a little wasted but there's room for them to improve should they return. Ejiofor will at the very least, hopefully Mikkelsen becomes Dormammu as Ben suggested

Dissapointed that Dormammu was a cloud thing and not this though

Really liked this last night. Thank god for subtitles or that bit at the end wouldn't have made sense to me.

I enjoyed it a lot. They really nailed the special effects (which even made me glad I was watching in 3D which has happened only a handful of times) but I agree with the poor villain sentiment which was a shame.

Some nice comic moments, although could have maybe done with one or two more. Strong showing overall though and will be interesting to see how they use him in future films.

Guardians is up first, I am betting that
There will be some sort of link, so they can turn up in Thor: Ragnarok, even if it is just a post credits scene like Doctor Strange
