Reviews

More than just sharing the Frank Miller DNA, it’s interesting to note how many cues Daredevil takes from The Dark Knight, specifically. This is a grounded, real world hero who operates in a tangible space. Every punch thrown in the film is felt and a punch is often not quite enough to take out an enemy in the world of Daredevil. Unlike most depictions of violence on TV, when facing an enemy, if Daredevil punches them he needs to keep on punching them until they stay down. This is a brutal, cold, and violent superhero series. And it’s absolutely captivating to watch.

Just as Daredevil owes a debt of gratitude to The Dark Knight, it also takes many cues from The Raid and The Raid 2. While the action scenes are rarely as visceral as either Raid films, the scenes feel just as real.

Daredevil is compelling, wonderful TV that will hopefully find an audience beyond fans of the Marvel superhero films. This is a dark, nuanced TV series that is worthy of a wide audience. Daredevil is utterly fantastic and demands that you use all of your senses while watching.

The pulpy style and brutality (torture is one of Daredevil’s tools) clearly seek a higher sense of realism, which must be balanced against the notion of a blind superhero who can shimmy up walls and whose spectacularly hearing lets him to function, among other things, as a human lie detector. Helpfully, Cox brings the necessary mix of grit and Marvel-esque self-doubts to the dual role.
By that measure, Marvel has shrewdly expanded its portfolio, and Netflix has upped its must-have quotient with a fiercely loyal segment of consumers. Viewed that way, costume or no costume, “Daredevil” looks dressed for success.

Daredevil was well-worth the wait, and breaks the Marvel movie mold with bone-crunching delight. It’s everything Nolan’s Batman never had time to explore, everything Arrow wants to be without network boundaries, and exactly the street-level drama Marvel needs to complete its superhero world.

Will definitely be giving this a watch (As it's a Netflix original I think it'll be in 4K as well wont it? All their original stuff gets put out like that now I think?), though I can't shake the terror of it ending up like the film :dread:

DAREDEVIL’S VINCENT D'ONOFRIO: IT’D BE AWESOME TO KICK SPIDER-MAN’S BUTT
One fun item that came up during out chat with D'Onofrio was concerning Spider-Man, who recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe and therefore can now theoretically face off against Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. the Kingpin. A frequent enemy of both Daredevil’s and Spidey’s (Fisk’s first appearance was actually in The Amazing Spider-Man #50), Kingpin’s big-screen rights were previously held by Fox (which also had Daredevil before the rights reverted to Marvel in 2012). But now that Marvel can use Spidey as well as Kingpin, a match-up would seem to be inevitable.

We asked D'Onofrio if a Spider-Man/Kingpin battle could be in the cards on the big screen, and while he admitted that he has “no idea” at this point, he also said he’d love to do it.

“That would be super-cool, yeah,” said the actor. “To be able to kick Spider-Man’s butt would be awesome.”

Not surprisingly, the secretive Marvel Studios has not revealed any such plans to D'Onofrio yet. Of course, knowing Marvel, anything is possible.

“But we just don’t know about those things,” he continued. “Those are all the Marvel secrets that they never tell us until they need us, so… Yeah, I would do it. I would do it in a second.”

The one thing I absolutely love about D'Onofrio is that he seems ridiculously enthusiastic about his role as the Kingpin. It's really great, hopefully he'll be in and about the MCU and the Defenders-Verse(or whatever they're gonna call it. Netflix-Verse?) for a number of years.
