"Since launch, we have had time to listen to the feedback from our most passionate fans and we are responding. With the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team's artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe."

BioWare has announced the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, a free download for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 that addresses the controversial ending of the game.

It provides "additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes" to the ending, and launches this summer.

The Extended Cut is designed to give players "seeking further clarity to the ending of Mass Effect 3 deeper insights into how their personal journey concludes", BioWare said.

BioWare boss Ray Muzyka commented: "We are all incredibly proud of Mass Effect 3 and the work done by Casey Hudson and team.

Executive producer Casey Hudson added: "We have reprioritized our post-launch development efforts to provide the fans who want more closure with even more context and clarity to the ending of the game, in a way that will feel more personalized for each player."

It's better than nothing, but it sounds like a massive half measure. It's basically going to be this, right?

They're blatantly just gona miss the whole point, keep the bullshit ending choices and insert some random "here's what happened to X" *insert stock photo stolen off the internet here* and leave it at that. The whole bloody ending from getting hit by the beam needs a rewrite.

Problem with this is, what if people moan about the 'new' ending they come up with? And they going to carry on the protests again? Will Bioware have to make another ending? The only problem with this is if it sets a precedent. What if fans of other franchises protest if they don't like the ending of their favorite game and stuff?

Unless this ending takes out the star child nonsense and replaces it with the war with the Reapers that we've been waiting for then i'm not sure how much this will appease fans. Of the people here and on Bioware that dislike the ending...the one thing we all agree on is how much we dislike the whole inclusion of the ghost child. Some hate it because it seems so out of place in the ME universe, while others (me included) hate it because the gooseberry fool he says contradicts everything that Sovereign was trying to do in ME1. Credit to Bioware for caving in i suppose but as i said, the problem is what happens if fans still aren't appeased?

It's the "we've listened to fans" bit that gets me all bothered. They obviously haven't or they'd known that bodging an epilogue onto the ending is not what the fans wanted: they want an ending that makes sense in the context of the universe. They want the War Assets to affect something other than how many of the A, B, C options you get. They wanted the Star Child gone.

Did they want the moon on a stick? Possibly, but BioWare can't simply pretend to be appeasing them by saying they've "listened."

It's going to be NOWHERE NEAR as good as the Animal House ending.

I've decided that Animal House is my canon Mass Effect ending, and nothing EA can do now will change that.

If they'd done their job right in the first place it wouldn't have been an issue.

I want to know what "artistic vision" it was that Casey Hudson had for the ending. I'd genuinely like to know what he was going for.

The internet complained because the ending contradicted a lot of what had been established in ME1 and 2 and had so many plotholes in it. In ME1, Sovereign's trying to unlock the Citadel for the rest of his buddies to come pouring in...fast forward to ME3 and the Starchild says he's responsible for the Reapers and he's always been on the Citadel so why didn't he help Sovereign? Sovereign says they're purpose can't be comprehended - the star child says Reapers do their thing because they don't think Synthetics and Organics can get along. Despite (my) Shepard ending the Geth/Quarian war and the fact that EDI has fallen in love with Joker and formed an emotional bond with the Normandy crew.

I don't agree with the insults and personal attacks that some at the Bioware forums have aimed at Casey Hudson and company but the reason for their complaining is because them and us here and other gamers all wanted to see the trilogy get the send off it deserves. It's one thing talking about artistic integrity...but what it leads to an ending that makes little sense, people are bound to be up in arms.

Yeah, this pretty much. There are so many narrative inconsistencies that the ending just completely falls apart. Tacking on a few "Liara started her own shooting range" blurbs isn't going to change the fact that they strawberry floated the ending up so royally.

Also, I strawberry floating hate the PR speak BioWare have been using throughout this. Rather than a measured and personal response from Hudson it's been corporate brand-speak from the get-go. Hardly surprising EA has been voted the worst company in America this week.

I think they could have gotten away with if they included just a little bit of service to the player and the decisions that have been made.

Although I initially didn't have a problem with the ending, when thinking about another play through and if I would go renegade?, class type?, who I would save?, etc and thinking of all the different things I would like to see, it sucks to think that no matter what the ending would be the same. It's baffling really, the amount of insignificant things that are added to pay fan service to the first two games, yet nothing you've done has any consequence with regards to the ending.
