It emulates perfectly well.

I've always loved the 80s stylings of the angular Master System 1, but you may prefer the sleek, smoothed Master System 2.

Or if you already have a game gear or Megadrive, I believe there were adaptors for those systems to let them play Master System games.

There are also a series of official licenced clones from places like Brazil that actually come with a large number of games built in.

Just don't get completionist on it, because collecting MS games is a world of pain.

If you want to stick to original hardware an RGB cable is probably the best way to go.

Megadrive: http://www.robwebb1.plus.com/megadrive/megadrive.htm
Master System 1: http://www.robwebb1.plus.com/sms/sms.htm

Avoid the Master System 2 because RGB was disabled in that revision.

And avoid the stock RGB cable that came with the Megadrive 2:

The Pal Sega Megadrive 2 (model n° MK-1631-50) is a beautiful and more compact update of the original Sega Megadrive. It also came standard with an RGB cable aimed at providing the best and most clear image quality. Indeed an RGB cable give you a much better image definition and clearer visuals than an RF or composite cable.

Unfortunately many if not most of these Sega RGB cables (model n° MK-1637-09) were flawed and showed "line effects", bad image quality and even caused sound problems (a "whistling" effect or distortions). Luckily this very simple mod improves the image output of this RGB cable significantly, eliminating in most causes the problems mentioned above.

I have a Megadrive II, so I looked at the adapter needed for that. It didn't seem like it cost much less than getting the Master System (and I think I'd prefer that option) so I'm thinking I'll go for the Master System 1 with the RGB cable.

I wasn't sure if using a Megadrive w/ an adaptor would be better somehow in the sound/visuals department but I don't think that's the case.

The Power Base convertor is almost literally a Master System that plugs into the Megadrive, but it does mean you can reuse existing cables, setups and controllers, which is why I mentioned it. It also opens up some interesting cart stacking opportunities.

The original power base convertor does look really cool when combined with the original Megadrive, though.
