MGS 1 is perfect. Sons of Liberty while not up there with MGS1 is still a damn great game. While I didn't love Snake Eater as much as others did, another damn fine MGS game.

MGS4 needed serious editing, less watching and more gameplay with a better story overall and it could have been something. I find Phantom Pain, although plays the best of the whole lot has easily the most boring non-mgs story of the entire series. Seriously what was it all about?

We so badly need these games on modern systems. A proper MGS1 remake would be a dream.

MGS wasn't cancelled on PC, it came out about a year after the PS1 release admittedly but it was definitely not cancelled, I own it on both PlayStation and Windows so I know what I'm talking about!

The PC version added a first person view as well which was cool.

MGS1 is probably the only game in the series that I would say I genuinely loved, other entries have varied from either being "meh" to being good but with wonky bits. MGS5 is a mechanically fantastic game that seems to keep trying to spoil your fun by distracting you with gooseberry fool story sections.

Yeh I probably should have expanded that a PC version did eventually come out. I'm pretty sure it was long after the PS version though?

Yeah it was a year and a bit later I think. I certainly played it on PS1 first but got given the PC version by someone later. It was also back in the days before controller support was quite so well refined on PC so actually playing it was a bit frustrating at times if I recall. Still loved it though!

To me the very peak of Metal Gear Solid was the opening tanker section of MGS2, about 75% of which was given away for free as a demo with OPS2 and ZOE.

I think the disappointment for MGS2 comes from the fact it wasn't the game everyone thought, wanted or expected it was going to be at the time. The oil rig just couldn't match up to the creativity and choice the tanker presented. The story, which felt very focused in that tanker section, then loses the plot as well. I think that opening section was legit about an hour in length, and yet you could happily drag it out to 3 or 4 hours such was the ability to explore and mess about.

MGS has been very good at providing these moments that tend to stay with you forever, whether it's the memory card swap in 1 or climbing a ladder for about 6 minutes in MGS3 as the theme music plays in the background.

Of the MGS games I've played (1,2,3, TS and Acid) I'd say the following order of preference

3 > TS > 1 > 2 > Acid.

Don't think I can physically manage to play the newer ones, which is a shame as I do love the series.

Loved 5, loved 4, enjoyed peace walker and 3. Loved 1 and started it again as soon as I finished it. 2 is probably my favorite for all the reasons already mentioned. Its still amazing to play and graphically it's lovely. Also best demo ever.

Would love to play the new survival game but it looks so gooseberry fool that I don't think I'd be able to stand it.

Wish my image sig would work

I've loved them all for different reasons, but only the original MGS remains in my all time favourites. It's definitely aged a bit (I played it start to finish for SKSP a couple of years ago), especially the controls being quite clunky at times, but my god it's still a great game.

I've seen a few people mention the original Metal Gear games. Are you talking the MSX games which by all accounts are pretty decent, or the NES ones which Kojima had nothing to do with and were utter trash?

I also really enjoyed Revengence. It was different but the universe its set in is so well done.

Honestly if you can't play them and do love the series I'd recommend just watching all the wonderfully crazy cutscenes from 4 as they really are something :) I'd say do the same with 5 but I actually found the cutscenes pretty boring (barring a couple of course) after the first hour.
